I've just done an oil change recently and switched to fully synth as the dealer had an offer on that made it the same price as semi synth.
Haven't noticed any difference yet. |

Halfords ( or similar) semi-synth motorcycle oil will do every thing you need as long as its changed every 4K. |
I doubt you'll encounter any problems with synthetic oil, but I doubt you would on semi-synth either.
Let us know in 100k miles time how you got on! I think the running-in issue on fully synth is a bit misinterpreted also. As I suggested before, the main advantages of synth are stability and long service interval, and it's not necessarily true that it will "prevent" bedding-in, but that's another discussion entirely. |
Just noticed Heine Gerricke have a deal on Motul semi synth, oil filter and air filter for £25.
How does that compare? as seperates I had the oil filter as £7 air filter as £12 that makes the oil £6 Let me know your thoughts. JB68 |
My slant on the subject. There is nothing wrong with using Fully synth in a bike, but after at least 1000 miles. However, Fully synth is usualy quite hard to find if you are out and about and need oil. So, my sv has always run semi synth. Its easier to get hold of from grages etc, and you should not mix semi, and fully synth oils, afaik.
My XR2 used to run Mobil 1 at a change rate of every 3000 miles. It had some head work done on it, and the garage commneted on how 'clean' the engine was and the general condition of the 120000 miles engine. Semi synth is my vote. |
Just a thought for you all:
when I worked for VW/Audi (in the eighties), The germans were doing tests on oils and service parts, the recomendations then were that triple electrode plugs, mobil oil (poss Mobil 1, i cant remember exactly) and the genuine VAG oil filters were to be changed at the 20,000 mile point. Dont know if it has changed, probably has or they would go bust :D |

Fitted it all on Monday. I thought this was a better deal as after 5 years my air filter still looks ok. |

I read (in Ride magazine, I think) that mixing semi synth and fully synth wasn't a problem - only thing being that the mixture obviously won't have the properties of fully synth. I have no problems with mixing them, so long as they're both fresh to start with. Anyone else here think mixing them is a bad idea?

Being caught short a few times in my cage (an MG) i think it's got all 3 kinds of oil in it. I know recently I put in 2 litres of semi, after a litre of fully a few months back. No obvious problems. I've never heard of mixing being a problem.
