When you undo the alun key headed bolts at the front of the petrol tank you can pivot the fuel tank up (to get access to the airbox, amongst other things). This bit of metal is used to hold it up while you work there, a bit like that rod under car bonnets. Basically the hoop goes round that shiny round bit between the bars and the thin end goes through the hole you took the bolt out of (only pointies have this, IIRC).

My pointy used to have one of these contraptions, until I launched it into the scrap pile because it wouldn't fit under the seat properly. I now use a carefully crafted (hacksawed to size and left rough edged) block of wood to hold the tank up.

It's something the previous owner of my bike declined to include in its sale along with the tool kit.
