Liz and I watched some of the program. Its certainly a thought provoking subject. There was another 9/11 documentary, that followed a fire crew round on that day. They were in one of the buildings and on the soundtrack you could hear thumps. When the TV crew asked one of the fireman what the noise was, he replied something like "jumpers" and the look on his face was horrible.

Personally I think it took alot of guts to accept that your time had come and to choose to jump out of the window rather than get burned to death I think personally took an immense amount of courage.

Now in my opinion the use of the picture was valid. It illustated very graphically the kind of impact and terror that was caused that day. I think we live in a cotton wool shrowded society and we should be facing up to what was for alot of people a very very horrifying day. Not shying away from it by turning away from images like that. For me that picture helped make it all the more real. As Peter says watching the planes hit the towers on TV was like watching a computer game. Images of people jumping out of a window was something for me that made me able to relate much more closely to what those poor souls and their families were having to face up to and deal with.

This is IMHO and I dont wish to cause offense to anybody.

It was a disturbing event and the pic reflected that....though all the papers care is about making money of course.

Burn or fly to your death?

I would choose the latter cos it is the lesser of the two, still must take some guts.

After watching the program I strongly disagree with Big Ape censoring the photo.

The jumpers made a brave decision to choose the manner of their death to die rather than be killed, so to speak.

I think you do them a disservice by censoring them.

They have a right to honourably be remembered.

they have a right to be remembered, of course.

they are not in a position to say whether they want their last images of themselves hurtling to their deaths to appear in newspapers and internet websites. out of respect of the families of those lost in such a manner i think that bigape was right to delete the picture. if you want to look at somebody dying, then look at it on another website. not this one.

I watched the programme and it was compulsive viewing. My opinion and I have thought about this alot is, I don't know that it did take courage or bravery to jump. In a situation where you are in a room where the heat, smoke etc is so intense I don't think anyone could have thought rationally. Basic instinct would have been to get away irrespective of the fact that you were 90+ stories in the air. I don't think that I could have made a conscious decision to jump in the same situation. It would have been a panic reaction.

What I couldn't stomach was why did they have to try and identify the jumper.

The picture should be seen. All the pictures should be seen. People should get up close and personal with the visual reality because it provokes a truer emotive reaction where words alone cannot do justice.

Words can be heard and changed over time, the mind can alter inflection and sooth pain. Once something like that has been burned into your retina it has burned into your soul; you'll never alter or forget the truth of it.

It's the profit that is sometimes made from such images that is the 'Bad Thing' TM when it does not benefit those involved (whether diretly or 'relatively').


Whether it needed to be seen here, in this post - I can't honestly say. However I respect BigApe's decision to remove it whilst still suggesting an avenue of research (google). He is a Moderator, it's what they do; I for one would not like the responsibility of trying to take other peoples views into account whilst leaving your own at the door.

To help bring it home that it was real.Find out more about his background however, error of judgment if you ask me, yes the dead should be remembered, in quiet reflection, not plastered all over the media. Show the pictures once, thats all. Pics were quite powerfull and do not need to be seen again, as it will remain with me forever as it will the folk all around the world.
