Thats why I dont answer my phone if it it says "Private number" or "number withheld" on the display of it. If its important thats what voice mail is for.

My Mum used to get nuisance calls.

One day a man called her about 5 times and got abusive (it was a sales call). So on call 6 I answered, The call almost crapped himself and never rang back - I think it was the male voice who calmly tackled the caller and threatened legal action.....

We're on the preference service here... I've also marked us for no marketing by phone from the bank I work from. But from time to time some target-hunter thinks its clever to phone us, and if they get me they get in an awful lot of trouble... If I get a name, i can get a location, if i can get that I can get a manager, and if I can get that then they get a written warning. It really, really annoys me. I know the system they use, it comes up with "NO MARKETING BY PHONE" in huge letters on screen "It's not a marketing call Mr Cunningham, just a courtesy call".

As you can see from my signature I use a service from voipuser, the number by the way is a non geographic not premium rate. One of their service is to provide a redirection service. I have therefore set up a £0.5/minute redirection to my mobile. I give the redirection not my personal number to companies where I think I might end up on a database. The cost they incurr in calling me is then used to subsidise my outgoing calls. Nice.

Thor, when they leave a message why don't they leave contact details - are you sure this isn't a prank? I've had some shirty investment poeple on the phone but they should tell you what company they are at least.

In short, he left me a message to tell me I was "sitting on my ****". I guess you wouldn't leave your contact details along with that. :?

I don't think it was a prank though.

Subscribe to TPS ** EDIT like phillipmac said earlier  **

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

If they are UK based, they can get into serious **** if they still call you.

** EDIT, Have you tried being abusive back ?.

My favourite it they ring me now is

Telemarketwalla: Hello can I speak to Mr Tricky please.

Mr Tricky: No, I'm afraid he died this morning. Goodbye. **

When i signed up to TPS it stopped the cold calls to my landline. They also have another service that you can sign up to that stops junk mail coming through you letter box.
