Good choice with the SV, im loving mine as a first bike. I say go for the one you like the look of most, I prefere the pointys and I brought new becuase of the 0% finance deal they are doing at the moment. Crashed for the first time yesterday and its now damaged but ah well, it was going to happen and I was expecting it :)

Main advantage of the Fuel Injection as someone said above is no carb icing which im really glad of... would be such a pain in the ass when commuting in winter.

Same one - doing their "Super Six" package, which for those who are interested is

1 hour lesson on the Theory Test
The booking of the Teory Test
CBT (one day but in my case I had a second day - didn't cost me anything extra for that)
Then onto the Direct Access course which is 2.5 days on 125's then the rest and your test on 500s

Total cost was about £700, but that includes all bike hire, insurance, their damage waiver and loan of helmet if needed (didnt need - got my own lid just after I booked for it)

Had a guy called Ray for the 1st day and Nick on the second day, both very good at what they did but each with their own unique style :)

i think ray might be the guy who i had for a lot of it, big guy who LOVES his rollups, got a beard, etc. i think nick's the grumpy one lol, iirc, haha!

i did the supersix too, cost £640 (changes price during the year, was £599 i think before end of march). in case anyone is reading that's 5 days of training with the last day being test day (some courses do 3-5 days it seems).

Also the one thing i loved about this course was that you get to take the 125s home for 2 nights! that is definitely very useful :D

p.s. in case they don't say, ask to take them home on the 1st and 2nd nights - after that you're on 500s and so it's a lot less use going home on a 125...

Yeah good luck with your test. I did mine in Manchester, that was bad enough. I can't imagine what it'd be like trying to do it down in the smoke.

Yep Ray, beard and roll-ups, Nick kinda grumpy, but knows his stuff - spends 6 months of the year in Thailand, the rest training people to ride - sounds like a great life :)

Yep thats what I am looking forwards to - might do quite a few miles on the Sat night, got a mate who has just gotten himself a new bike - might see if he fancies a midnight trip around The City - should be nice and quiet up there.

Looking forwards to getting Motorway clearance :) - there's this stretch of the M25 just anti-clockwise of the M40 where, if you hit it at the right time of night, with the orange glow of the lighting seems kind of unreal - even in my old Vauxhall Nova I was sure that at any time I would hear the words "Riiiiiiidge Raaaaaaaacer" - could be a lot of fun on a bike.

BTW does anyone know if the New Drivers Act applies to someone who has just gotten their Bike License but has a full car license dating from 1991?

You're quite safe.

Crash protectors will save a huge ammount of damage, so get them fitted. If you prefer the look of the k3 spend the extra if you have it, keep it clean and it will last you ages. Whatever you get fit the crash protectors as it can make the diffrence between no damage and a potentail write off (dented tank+frame). R&G make the for around £50 and there are other cheaper altenatives that are as good if not better, just make sure they attach to something very solid like the engine mounting bolts.

Farings make a big diffrence over distance but for short blasts you dont really need one at sv speeds, look at what sort of riding you do - mostly town or very tight roads go for the unfaired, more open roads go for a half-faired. The unfaried might help you keep the speeds down and your licence clean.

I can't comment on anything previous to the K3, since I've not ridden one. But I'd say that if you like the look of a pointy, go for it. I ride a K6 (as Abyss, 0% finance).

Congrats on the test, and you got better value for money than I did, 2 days training (straight onto 500cc Kwak's, but then I'd been riding my CG125 for a month on the road before that), then the test. £475 :( Well worth it tho, the instructors where I did the course made it worth the money.
