the info we've just had about the entire thing is as follows

The training is either going to be done here at Cosford or at St Athens in Wales (the info as of today is pointing at Wales)

if its in Wales, then ill either be made redundant or offered a job in wales under the contractor (which wouldn't be feasible)

if its Cosford the contractor takes over, and here's the sneaky bit as soon as the contractor takes over the government are no longer liable for anything that happens to the staff. We've basically been told that something like a month after they take over there going to freeze our pensions, get rid of flexi time, and can and probably will cut our wages and holiday (its already happened on the 3 sections of cosford that have been privatised)

so as you can understand i really don't want to be here.

plus i hate the job and want to leave anyway

You don't know what you want to do, have you had a good look around? Ignore everything and have a think about what you would like to do. For instance, you say you want something 'hands on'. Ok, like what? Plenty of things fall into that category you know. Plumber springs to mind as they are hands on and they make a ridiculous amount these days.

If you are truly unhappy doing what you are doing then change it.

as daft as it sounds i did a week long trining course to be a plumber, its only basic emergancy stuff. i was meant to be getting a job with the company who trained me, but that never happened. ive tryed numerous plumber/heating ventalation places round here and none of them are interested, infact i was told by one of them the midlands now has soo many plumbers that centra heat had to let go 5 plumbers the other day.

I agree with Kate, if you want to do something with your hands then look at a trade like plumbing, plasterer, electrician etc.

All of these trades are fading and if you build up a good reputation you'll never need to advertise. The money you can earn doing one of these now is very high and you can choose your own hours.

Goat hearder?

Recluse?

Driving instructor?

I don't know about the Midlands, but down south good plumbers and electricians are hard to come by. The company where I currently work (for another 2.5 weeks anyway, yay!) are always hiring, there just aren't enough around.

If you like it, keep looking, perhaps try and get some more training.

What about house/building renevations etc? thats also hands on and a carpenter I used to know had so much work on he was turning people away.

Plasterer? A good plasterer is worth his/her weight in gold and is another hands-on job.

If you believe the hype this is a pretty good idea. You get training and a guarenteed job at the end of it and the pay is pretty good at around £30k too. This is just from the adverts, I don't actaully know anyone who is an instructor.

This is the hard bit :) It's easier to dislike what you do than know what you'd rather do.

Security is a great job to have when you go back and study. I did it for a few years whilst I went back and studied. It was mainly 4/5 hotel work so helped to get in with the interest in the area - plus plenty of study time on the night shift :-dd . Use some form of bridging course to get you back onto a course of somesort and use the security as a step to get you to the next.

Also I would say take some time out and go and travel if you are young. Get yourself a work visa for oz and a buy a flight ticket - spend 6 months working down there save some cash for the rest of your travels. That may open up some opportunities for you - plus its more fun than studying.
