I lowered Liz's SV last week (my significant other, she's had a naked curvey for all of 2 weeks now).
She's 5'6ish and could just get the balls of her feet down on the ground with straight legs. Being used to having feet flat on the deck (with bent knees) this was ruining her confidence worring about dropping it at any slightly off camber road junction.

I fitted a set of longer dog bones (from banditmania) and dropped the forks to 10mm through the yokes (not counting the cap). With this done she can now sit on the bike with feet flat on the deck and knees bent with no problems, seat is still standard.
The bike now has a ground clearance, upright and with a rider of 5 3/4". Put in perspective my Triumph Trophy, in stock trim with a rider has a ground clearance of 5" to the belly pan and it has no grounding issues.

On a fast A/B road run I was unable to notice any difference in the handling. The limiting factor as ever being budget stock suspension.

If needed the forks could be dropped lower. I removed the spring and compressed the leg then refitted to the yokes to ckeck the clearance available (naked curvey remamber, please check other models first) and found you can go to 17-18mm through the yoke before the lip of the dust seal will hit the bottom yoke.

The banditmania lowering links drop the back end 25-30mm and cost £37 inc next day delivery. The only issue I had with them was that the zinc plating was so thick I had to run a 12mm drill bit through the holes to get the bolts to fit properly. If you use an abba stand they are a doddle to fit.

The only thing I'd avoid with a lowered bike would be a hugger, an undertray or a belly pan as you may then run into clearance issues.

Although 5'2 is quite short with a combination of lowering, seat and possibly the daytona boots I don't think she should have a problem. At least at £37 it's cheap enough to lower the bike and have a go.

Hope this is of some use.

cheers

Did you check for radiator clearance as well?

stewart-250 22-08-06 09:16 AM

Radiator clearance  never thought about that. Will check it the next time I have the bike up on the stands. I would imagine though that we should be ok with the 10mm drop through the forks at present as many others have dropped them further with no reports of an unwanted rad/mudguard interface.

10 ought to be just fine... I think I was 12mm when I changed the front.
