I don't ride with a rucksack, because I feel unbalanced, now I never will.

A first rate back protector makes all the difference. I always wear a rucksack, try to pack it sensibly, but always wear my Knox protector too (those soppy ones built into most jackets are rubbish, not to be bothered with).

The two times I've fallen off  , I've been wearing a rucksack, and both times slid in to a kerb with my back. The rucksack actually helped, but then it only had soft stuff in it. So I suggest they're fine, providing you engage brain.

I have been using my rucksack since I bought the bike and have never even considered that it might be a risk to me!!!

I have carefully thought of everything else, but not once has the thought of what is in my back actually entered my head.

This morning I came in and in the bag was:

A DVD burner
A laptop
A digital camera

the list goes on........when I read this thread and thought about all that I turned white!

Thanks for potentially saving me from gaining an injury in this way!

What's the best option for stuff then - tank bag?

I dunno - you tell me?

Personally I think he's fairly harmless if you don't mind having your mobile phone and wallet being carried in his belly!

 Look, someone else bought it for me OK and his purchase sponsered the upkeep of a herd of Zebras and he's soooooooo totally at odds with anything I would ever willingly submit to buying, let alone wearing that I do actually take pity on the poor deformed beast and so use it for it's intended purpose cos being on crutches tends to make carrying around little stuff a bit of a pain. So ner. :smt012

I use a tank bag; laptop, phone wallet, disk lock, everything goes in it. Lots of you seem to be using rucksacks or strapping to rear seat, why is that? just personal preference? or something more that I may have over looked? I like my tank bag becasue I can see it hasn't fallen off

A bungy net is a great thing to have under the seat. It's easy to just bungy a ruck sack down. Tank bags are also good but are usually not as easy to carry when you are off the bike.

for bigger stuff, I have a buffalo tail pack and more recently, a givi top box

i always wear a rucksac on the bike, and when i dont wear it it feeld really odd. the rucksack i normally wear is a walking rucsakc, i think it is a karrimor, and it has what is called airspace, and has a large plastic bent bit of plastic for support, and there is a nice gap between your back and the bag. fallen off twice and it acts as more of a back support really.
