Damn, I answered the poll before reading the first post. I used to ride much quicker than I do now. There was a time when I honestly didn't go out on the bike (bar for a 5 minutes cross town trip) where I didn't do licence losing speeds. It's more for fear of prosecution (6 points & need to drive for work) than anything else that stops me speeding. I just don't buy the argument that speed (the way I speed at least) has much at all to do with accidents. Whenever I've had an accident, it has been 10mph+ under the posted limit- I tend to go slow when it's actually dangerous to go quick. I genuinely believe it's just an easy (read lazy) target for policing. What about the British gas van that changed 2 lanes without indicating and clipped my arm on the motorway yesterday (quite literally) forcing me into another lane? What did speed have to do with that? What about the woman I saw in London the same day, driving while on her phone, who very nearly took a cyclist out? The cretins bang on about speed being the problem enough and sadly the majority (who see motoring in purely practical terms and take little interest in it) start to believe it and cite it as fact.

Comparing weekend warriors doing stupid overtakes past junctions at 160 and crashing is irrelevant to me doing 80-90 on a road I know like the back of my hand, in good conditions, with nowhere for traffic/pedestrians to emerge from and where I can see the surface is clear. It really is akin to comparing an alcohlic to a casual drinker. They are slightly related, but are really completely different things and one is not a problem at all.

Now, where's the soap box smiley? ;)
