No you don't!

Too right F_S. The warranty book for mine simply states that servicing must be done to the schedule, by someone "mechanically competent." That could be almost anyone.

So I do the little bits now, a mate helps with the bigger bits, garages will do the stuff we can't. Receipts for parts get stapled in the service book where the dealer would stamp.

Do all bar the 15 thou service myself!
Get a CD-Rom service thing from Ebay and a haynes manual, you will see how easy the service is and how much a garage wont do on the 4 and 7 thou service.

IMO the only service you need to get done on the bike by a proper mechanic is the 15 thou every 2 years.

A large part of the appeal of motorcycling for me is taking the things apart and ****ing about with them :D

why do you do that many miles in a year? I am sure the 15000 is that or every 24 months?

Just commuting for me, no fun time, 24000 miles a year. :(

If I play too much, or have 2 many trips away, the 15000mile service happens inside six months (it hasnt yet, thankfully).

Because we can:) We just live for biking, and are out to play every chance we get. No commuting miles either, purely pleasure:D

Amen to that.

I didnt on the SV but I am now. With two bikes I can take the SV apart if I f*ck it up, I can take the GSXR out instead :D

Initially it was to save money, but theres something unbelievably satisfying about taking it apart and fixing it yourself and getting it running again.

Re: Servicing your bike yourself

My sv was servied up until 38k by a dealer, purley for convienence. The garage was good. Not cheap but dealers never are. I now do bits when the bike needs it. I have always done things like brakes etc. I have always serviced my car, except for my current car.

Anyway, i love thread like this. When most people buy a secondhand vehicle, they all take a sharp intake of breath when it hasnt got a full service history, and probably walk away!! (I know theres some of you that will say, 'but if i know its been done by someone who knows aht they are doing etc etc. Still, most would still walk away.

You pays your money and all that.
