I'm with Supanames on their mid-host linux package.

£3.33 per month when two years are bought, 1.5GB space and 10GB monthly transfers, one domain, 5 mysql databases, choice of php4 or 5, phpmyadmin via CPanel, database backup scripts, perl & python, 10 sub-domains, 500 email accounts, spam filtering and virus protection, etc.

Don't be tempted by their cheaper packages, though - the servers can't cope with the loadings put upon them and I ended up having to upgrade. Absolutely no such problems with current package and one very satisfied customer here :D

Well I need to possibly host a forum, along with a web fronted, so will that restrain me in anyway?

Grinch, I'm with 1and1 you could give them a try.

Incredibly easy to add stuff to your package, nice easy(ish) control panel.

You wanna host a forum ... they offer it in one of their packages ... so it should be easy to set up (probably something like "include this HTML/code in your webpage", or just add some CGI scripts or stuff).

Only issue I could ever see with hosting a forum would be the amount of traffic - so might be worth just checking what limits there are (if any) on available bandwidth of site traffic.

www.fasthosts.co.uk are pretty good for hosting but nothing much more i'd say. they also do domain names thru a sub company called UK Reg but i know little about them.

DO NOT GET A DEDICATED SERVER from fasthosts tho cos they are utter crap, unsupported and they have a 3 day turn arouind time to any issues you have with it.

i tried telling them the other day that they were only suposed to turn off the Terminal Services on ours while i did some maintanence. They fluffed that up and when i called them to tell them they said "you'll have to respond to the email we sent you" the reason i called was to say they had turned off our mail service too and i couldnt access my emails.
"OK, i see" they says "can you put that in the reply to the email"

Wanna forum then all the decent ones use a mysql database.

Make sure that whatever package you go for you get at least two, one for a "live" site and one for backup/testing.

I run my whole website from a database using a CMS system; makes backups easy

Re: Domain Names and Webhosting.

As most of the stuff I do is servlets/jsp etc I needed a hosting service that would give me control over a tomcat environment and with Oracle servers etc. Couldn't find one and as it is for development purposes I host my own from home.

So whilst bandwidth might not be brilliant, Reliability is excellent. Backups are done properly, scheduled maintenance is always communicated by me to me etc.

I don't expect a lot of bandwidth, and at first I don't really expect any at all as I will need to get the idea running. That even if I can think of something to fill it all up with, but we will see.
