Re: For those that have broken bones-question

I knackered my right wrist quite spectacularly (absolutely shattered the bones, worst the docs had seen). The pain when I did it wasn't unbearable. Once they had given me a load of morphine, it hardly hurt at all. :D

The worst I felt was definately due to the pain in the arm when the painkillers wore off, and the discomfort of the cast, rather than any sickness. I did throw up whenever I tried to eat after the operation (which I had been really heavily sedated for) for about 18 hours, so in total was nil by mouth for almost 2 days. After I was out of hospital, the pain was negligible whilst I had the cast on (6 weeks). It started to smell a bit and was itchy, but I got used to it. When I had the cast off, the muscle had shrunk through lack of use (cast had covered my whole arm) and I could no longer do pull ups, or play racquet sports other than badminton for about a year (by which point I got the strength back in it). I'm sure if I'd been really into a sport at that time, I'd of been able to do physio and exercises to get the strength back sooner. I was warned it'd hurt when the weather was cold. It did for the first 3 years or so (only a dull ache, not real pain, mind), but thereafter has been fine. It looks a bit odd now, but other than that there are no lasting effects of it. Apparently when I get really old it might start acheing again, but I'll have to wait and see if that's the case.

Lack of sleep due to the discomfort is always a problem for me after breaking a bone and is the most miserable bit of having a broken bone. You are actually quite fortunate that you broke a limb and therefore it has been isolated in a cast. Not being able to get comfortable in bed (as you are moving the broken bones) is the worst!!

Personally I choose NOT to take any of the drugs, perhaps a bit fool hardy? But at least I don't get any side effects ;)

If I felt the pain killers would make it heal quicker, I'd take them, but as they don't then I'd rather not shove random pills down my throat!! I have taken anti-inflammatory before though as these should aid healing.

At the end of the day you just have to suck it up!!! :smt045

Just keep on reminding yourself that in 6-8 weeks you will be all fixed (bound to take a little longer to rebuild muscles etc) ... so it doesn't 'matter' ... in the mean time you have a great excuse to eat ice cream and get people to be your slave :)

Might be worth getting calcium pills too. They're huge mind, because your body is crap at absorbing calcium!

Get well soon all of you!

I asked if I should drink more milk, take tablets etc (to up calcium intake) when I broke my last bone - I was told there was no need ... the body will only take in a certain amount, so there is no point going OTT!! (Well that is what they said, I drank more milk anyway!! :D)

Just eat good hearty meals, good nutrition rather than supplements.
Some bones hurt more than others. I broke my femur and it didn't hurt as much as 2 ribs, funny really but when I break a bone that part of my body goes numb for ages, except for the ribs.
I mean it hurts when they break, I can remember screaming and passing out when I broke the femur. Actually I remember thinking,"Who is that woman shrieking?"

Painkillers may well make you feel sick. When I broke my back I was on co-codamol for a bit and then a cocktail of other stuff. Can't remember what now. Depending on what you are on and how long you are taking them don't just stop taking them when you get better. Wean yourself off. I had withdrawals, not through a mental addiction just through my body having got used to them.

I'd echo Razors comments of eat healthily. I don't see it can hurt to take some supplements as well but I'm no doctor!

WHen you've healed and you get some physio make sure you stick to it even if you find it hard. It's worth it in the long term.

Sorry to hear the news Paws!

Also take some vitamin D... it helps your body to absorb calcium
