Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

I`m a fair weather rider n i dont care if i get abused for it. I dont commute, dont use the bike daily, I`m not a quick rider but my obs are right and if I see someone trapping on i`ll give them the road they need without inconveniencing myself. I bought the bike for pleasure and thats it. I can go hard when i feel the need and the conditions are right for me. I see too many bikers who are possibly alot worse than me thinking they are alot better than me struggling with their road position on bends and so on. It makes me laff watching them. I`ll plod on and finish my ride at my pace and not have something abruptly stop it for me. It would be nice to take the bike to its limits but not on a road and a track day on my bike is a no no coz i would have a lowside due to me knowing that i would have to know the feeling of going past the limit which you cant know if you havent past it lol.

Most of the org only rides when the roads are dry and the sun is shining - doesn't make them all bad riders, just mean they don't like getting cold and wet. Obviously you'll get a few who couldn't ride a rocking horse, but in my experience there are a fair few of those who've been riding all year round since god was a teenager and still can't get it right.

We're none of us that good, if we were we'd all be earning millions riding MotoGP bikes and banging supermodels, so reel your necks in and just appreciate the fact that we've still got people who want to share our pastime with us before it gets legislated off the roads.

+1,
One of the best posts for a while. I have done 30k miles a year on a bike in all weathers when i was younger. I now only use the bike when i want to and in nice weather. I also wear leathers and have all the gear etc. However i still have my years riding behind me and know when to go fast and when to go slow. It really irks when people who have been riding through the winter decide that any one else is a liability and they know it all.
I do not see many racers commuting through the winter but last time time i looked they could ride a bike far better than me!!;)

Just be happy that we are all riding !!

This is very very true.

I drive through the Peak Distrct every week from home to Manchester airport. But I do it at 5am on a weekday when the roads are empty, it's immense.

This weekend reminded my why I actually hate to ride in the peak district on a weekend, speeds were rarely over 35 - 40 there was just so much traffic, even in area where people choose not to take a close up of the foliage.

Nobody is slagging off ALL weekend riders, just the inconsiderate adrenaline junkie kn*bbers who don't have the balls to take it to the track.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

I should probably have used the term weekend warrior instead of summer rider... narrows the stereotype down a bit more for the people that take offence way to easily.

Nope that still includes me G lol :)
I couldn't give a rats ass tbh, I know I'm not one of 'them' so don't care.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

I am pretty much one too... it wasn't meant to be a bitch fest that people decided to turn it into after getting overly sensitive lol

Purely that the summer only riders/weekend warrior riders are coming out and causing carnage as usual... hopefully I'll not be one of them causing carnage this year lol

I can see why the police crack down in derbyshire though so much, crazy costs involved yesterday with at least two air ambulance call outs and however much chaos associated to the local road network and police time.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

A bit of sunshine and the Peak is a totally different place. Four weeks ago, I hardly saw another bike and there were few 'tourists', but yesterday there were loads of both about (and yes, some of the bikers rode like idiots). Matlock was the usual bottleneck.
Sunny weekday evenings are the best time to ride in the Peak.

dirtydog 20-03-11 02:50 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

It's hardly being over sensitive when someone says that I'm a danger to everyone around me when I ride as I choose to ride only in nice weather or that because they ride all year round they are superior to me.
As I said I used to ride in all weathers even snow if I needed to, I used to rack up something like 10-12k miles a year commuting.

G 20-03-11 03:16 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

It is being over sensitive, if it doesn't apply to you then forget about it and move on. The sad fact is all of those crashes yesterday probably involved people that have not been on their bikes since well into last year... So summer riders. Same thing happens every year hence the stereotype. If you feel the need to get wound up as you 'technically' fall into the stereotype then your being over sensitive.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

well yesterday me n mand went out on the bike first time since.. gosh I dont know.. September maybe ..

just nice slow n steady and stopping to look at views and drink tea (and eat pies)

it was noticeable how it took a good hour to get back into it and "feel" the bike again.. but I knew that would be the case as I always take my first and second first ride very very steady ... after all, we all want to be here to enjoy the summer..

I think it is just general idiots on bikes that are idiots in life that fly past on blind bends and do us bikers no favours with car drivers..

The real sad fact is you know nothing of those riders, the circumstances in which they crashed or what weather/season they choose to ride in, yet you feel qualified to make a claim like this.

But he's probably right.

Any f***er is qualified to give their opinion on a probability.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

each to their own and all that. biking means different things to different people, if we all like the same thing the world would be a pretty boring place.

i must admit though i sometimes see riders and think ''ooohhh look there goes more spare parts for ebay''.

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

I can see Lozzo's point of view but on balance is more than probable(lol) YC is on the ball with his previous post.

For sure, on certain days of the week and/ time of the day(early morning and evening rush hour), it's quite a ball ache sharing the road with all the summer/weekend warriors(plenty who couldn't observe their way out of a wet paper bag) that've come out of hibernation :p ;)

For sure, each to their own but that doesn't make any alleged stereotyping less true...err probable. If I were to become a weekend warrior tomorrow, I'd not suddenly believe otherwise :D

dirtydog 20-03-11 06:15 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

The thing is riding like a moron isn't just restricted to fair weather/weekend warriors. Yes I agree that if they get back on to a bike and try and ride as fast as they did when they mothballed their bike months ago then they are a liability to themselves and others but to generalise that we're all like that is just as stupid IMHO.

yorkie_chris 20-03-11 06:19 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

No it's not, but people who have bikes as transport not toys are not likely to ride on luck. Catching the bus is damned inconvenient.

Generalise/stereotype whatever, people moan about women drivers, taxis, 'stanis, white vans, buses, it doesn't mean they're all bad either. Though the fact that I was nearly knocked off 3 times by taxis in a MILE the other night suggests they should all be killed.

People are complaining about "people who ride dangerously and/or inconsiderately who may or may not only ride their bikes for leisure purposes"... but it's a mouthful and it's much easier to say weekend warriors, so fackin deal with it :)

Edit: and by the way I have a million and one stereotypes and prejudices, and holding any one of those is nowhere near as stupid as riding round the outside of blind bends in heavily policed areas!

G 20-03-11 06:24 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

Amusingly I never even mentioned a stereotype in my first post!!! Just the fact that all the summer riders were out on one of te first nice days of the year... It's everyone else that's jumped on the bandwagon!

Came close to going out for a play on Snake's pass today. Sounds like I made the right call in giving it a miss. I don't like it much at weekends when you have the inept and over-confident out in large numbers. I prefer weeknights out of season = no enforcement, less traffic and none of the part-timers crashing into you. ;)

Weekdays are the best I love my drive back from Manchester on thursday evenings... Empty roads perfect.

I've seen plenty of dumb things like bad overtakes etc done by the non weekend warrior type just as I have seen plenty of dumb thing done by the weekend warriors.
The main arguement is against stupid/inconsiderate riders and drivers unfortunately there will always be people like that whether they're on a 'ped, commuter hack, latest and greatest sports bike, taxi, White van, BMW or whatever.
Some people are just dumb and that's what it pretty much boils down to I reckon.

Funnily enough, on my commute into London tonight there were a load of bikes on the road, I think it must have been a club rideout though, lots of hi-vis gear, impeccable indications and generally well ridden.

Then I get into London and have a guy on an L plate scooter climbing all over the back of me from Limehouse Link to Lower Thames Street (quite a few miles). Although I'm sure his bum left the seat when I opened the throttle a little bit on one of his overtaking manoevres and he got a faceful of my MOT-advisory exhaust note ;)

Doesn't that make you the pillock?

I've had people deliberately hold me up before and it just incites me to do something which will make them sh*t themselves when they least expect it.

funny enuf whilst at darley today we were looking at all the bikes people had arrived on most of them were mint with not many miles on, we commented on how they were like us and wernt really propper bikers lol :) there just a hobbie something to do at the weekend.

one bike that stands out was a cbr1000 20 years old mint with 9k on the clock :)

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

Theres been plenty round here today too, me and a mate held a pack of 6 power rangers back to the speed limit earlier near squires, my senses were twitching and round a blind corner there he was, the nice policeman with his radar gun and a slightly disapointed look on his face as 8 bikes trundled past :smt016

The number wheelying away from squires towards where this copper was hideing was unbeleavble though, a couple got quite a wobble on:reaper:

I supose I'm a fair weather biker, I refuse to ride when there might be ice but all my kit is waterproof so a bit of rain doesnt bother me.... Saying that if it is raining when im heading to work I take the car, don't mind riding home in it but im not leaving my kit in my locker if it's wet.

Littlepeahead 20-03-11 09:08 PM

Re: The summer riders were out in force today in the Peak District!

I don't use my bike during the week to get to work, it's 67 miles each way of dull motorway and then the horrible Finchley Road. And as I've already paid £4500 for my travelcard for bus, train and tube it's hardly worth getting the bike out to pay for petrol.

So I'm one of those people who rides just at the weekend, and if it's raining I become an even more hated figure - a woman driver in a massive BMW car! But I do move over for bikes as I know my tank takes up the whole lane.

I don't think this makes me a bad person though. And the last two years in the middle of winter instead of putting my heated grips and thermal pants on I've just headed to Thailand and ridden the mountain roads out there to remind me of why I love having a bike.

Can you post this to the BMW R1150/1200GS forum please. Those Charlie and Ewan wannabe to55ers won't move over for anyone. I get so angry I undertake them and sometimes have the urge to boot the arrogant pieces of crap off. They see you alright because you can see them checking both mirrors and watching you gesticulating for them to get their overweight, overpriced and over here teutonic sheds out of your way, then they slowly try to filter through gaps you can get a bus through, checking both sides to make sure there aren't any stray boulders or ravines around, as if the A40 is the Road of Bones. Bunch of utter w4nkers
