Well, they turned up today to take them. But most people had taken their bins back in last night.

When I phoned to complain, I got "Did you have it out for 7am", No it went out 7pm the night before. "Well they must have had a reason", what like they did when they failed to turn up 2 weeks ago. "Well we will pass it onto the collectors, it could take upto 48 hours before they are able to come back"

Our systems works well MOST of the time, weekly rubbish collections (bin never gets full, rarely even half full), bi-weekly recyclables (gets full most of the time and occasionally have to use the neighbours bins(with their permission)) and every other recyclable collection they take garden waste.

This works until they forget to come back for the recyclables after the main rubbish collection. This forces me to throw recyclable rubbish into the normal rubbish until they can be bothered to come back!

South Gloucestershire make the two bin system work well. I've no complaints. They keep the public informed of how we are doing at hitting recycling targets and even ask for public opinion on how it could be improved. They are thinking of moving to a food waste collection as well and have asked for public input on that.
In the examples in this thread of it all going wrong it is not the concept of the two bin system that is at fault, IMO, but the execution of it.
It is in our interest to recycle as the council, quite rightly, has targets to meet in reducing landfill. If they don't meet them they will get fined and they will increase council tax to fund the fine.
It is quite right to be cross about not getting the service from your council, or their sub-contractors though!

It's not the councils fault necessarily that they use crap operators

They have been told they have to sub out all services like this and what happens is they then look at the bids and the prices (they don't always just go for the cheapest)

What happens then is monkeys like violea come along and take over the contract cut the level of service and increase the profit margin then wait until the review peiod comes along and the complaints have rolled in and then promise to do better on the same money and get an extension

But when they haven't collected it for 2 months you can guess it is now over flowing and stinking and the excess has had to go in the general waste which is now overflowing as well.

Our wonderful labour council subcontracted it to some cowboy outfit couldn't organise a bonk in a brothel, and the residents to live with the incompetents legacy

Not quite as bad Tim, but i hear what you are saying. Vern and I moved in August last year, and we are now in the Borough of Bromley. Thier refuse is outsourced to Veiola(or something like that).

We have a weekly rubbish collection and a bi-weekly recylcing collection. Now, where we live we have a reisdentil parking bit round the back of the house, and afaik, thats where the stuff should be left. But since we have moved in, we have weeks where the normal bin wasnt taken, then weeks where the re-cycling wasnt taken, or only one of the boxes, ah and to top it all, we had to Steal erm...buy our own bin! Thier council tax is £22 a year more than lewisham (Previous borough i lived) and they supplied 2 full sized wheelie bins. One for rubbish, one for all reclyclable materials.

We have complained about 10 times to Bromely, and nothing changes. Damn outsourcing!!
