I would expect one coil to break down but not 2, though just swap the round to check. The front coil also drives the rev counter, so if that's not moving when it starts it shows the front is dead.
I would check that your choke cable hasn't snapped and is over choking the bike.

Another thing it could be is the starter relay switch breaking down, it has a little tab of metal that runs the live to the 30amp fuse, though I would expect this to drop load if you turn the lights and stuff on. You know its going as it turns a nice corroded green.

I am having the exact same problem and I left gas in my bike from November - May. Sputter around 7,000. I lifted the tank and the airbox, started the bike and sprayed carb cleaner on top of and inside the carburetor's valves. I also ran a tank of carb/fuel injector cleaner through my tank and still the same problem. I noticed that when I rev her up to 7,000 it sputters and bits of gas start coming up from the valves like it's magically running rich at 7,000.

I think me and Heed have the same problem. I am starting to think it's not gummed up lines, but what from long term storage could do this?

Also I hate to ask stupid questions and bog down the conversation but what is the coil pack?

The coils are the bits that control the spark to the spark plug, jumping the load up so you get a nice spark. When they give up they tend to cause a weaker spark so not igniting the fuel. The is one of the left and one on the rear of the frame where the tank hinge is.

9/10 electrical problems are carburetion.

You've left it sat for a couple of months with old crap fuel varinishing the jets for you, spraying stuff down the inlets doesn't count as cleaning the carbs out.

I've not stripped the carbs yet, I was hoping to avoid that if possible. I assume that a decent ride out won't clean it through?

My rev counter is working so I assume that the front coil pack is fine. I'll check the choke cable but it looked fine when I was working on the carbs.

It was doing this with the airbox off. Am I being stupid and will fitting the airbox stop this problem?

Nope, it should run with the air box off, just a bit rougher do to the 'free-flow' of it all. Run my bikes many a time with the air box off.

Aye, you just need to be careful that nothing drops (or is sucked) into the engine whilst the airbox/filter is off.

I was careful about not dropping anything anywhere near the engine with the airbox off. I just wondered if it being off could affect the fuelling. I dind't think it would but you never know.

Looks like I'm going to have to learn how to strip and clean carbs:eek:
