You can use different viscosity... its just 10W40 is the best oil for our climate.

Motorcycle oil only though is right... It gets used in the drive train (gearbox) and the engine unlike a car's oil.

If your oil level drops below the line what kind of problems can you expect to get???

Nasty expensive ones, like big end bearings getting battered into slimy metallic paste... Then partially siezing and spinning round in the rods...

Just general mechanical mayhem really.

Damn- mine appears to have just gone over the line over the last 2 days.

How quick does the damage set in?

Been trying to ride the bike at lower revs (6k or less) to minimise damage. I've been keeping an eye on the level over the last week- payday tomorrow- can't afford oil before (though may check if local honda dealer takes cheques still tonight)- is 10 miles each way to work...

This will learn me to keep a 4L can on the go at all times...!

It's gotta run pretty dry, but all it takes is a couple of bubbles to get sucked through the oil feed and that will start off the damage.

I still would really advise against riding it. Can't one of your mates lend you a bit of oil?
