'it surprises me that people aren't more interested in looking for themselves, or how easily they dismiss our observations of the world to defend their chosen faith'

thats why they call it faith, because they blindly follow it and will never question it

if hell isn't simply a way of frightening people then what purpose does it serve?

My idea was that hell was a place that meant justice actually happened to bad people who seem to get things in this world at the expense of good people... Although to be fair, from what I understand about "justice" its another human construct, so hell may be as well. I have belief but I certainly think imposing it on other people is a mega pain in the **** (with or without a megaphone).:smt083

1.

b. A public meeting place for open discussion.
c. A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas

i figured a place for open discussion was the best place to discuss it, otherwise i'll have to dig out my sandwich board and loudhailer and stand on a street corner, and it's bloody cold outside:mrgreen:

But is justice eternal damnation for a man whole stole a loaf of bread to feed his starving family?

the 8th commandment is pretty clear, it's not "thou stalt not steal unless you are starving" - it's "thou stalt not steal"

when you start to take these things literally you end up chopping peoples hands off

:rolleyes:again, sorry, have to disagree with your definition of the word "faith". I dont blindly follow anything. Ask Soulkiss, Im a pain that way :D. But I do have faith. One of the reasons that I dont call myself catholic anymore though is due to the fact that I kept on getting asked to leave (sunday school, church services) is that I DO question it, and expect intelligent answers not "just because".
