Re: New star trek movie
I really enjoyed the movie- made me feel like an excited kid again like no star trek has in years (not a fan of anything from TNG onwards). The characters were great. I was bowled over by Bones, as Karl Urban is terrible in most of the other things he's been in (maybe just because his overacting style suits Bones).
I thought it was very well paced- loads going on and loads of nice touches in reference to classic trek. Lots of humour too and not in the forced, twee, unfunny and self-congratulating way that some of the more recent Treks were (like that awful scene on the boat in the Holodeck in a recent film- First Contact, I think). |
Re: New star trek movie
The boat scene was Generations (where they are on the old wooden Enterprise), with First Contact they moved more away from that type of indulgence then back again for Insurrection.

I just watched it. Not a trekie and totally enjoyed it. The Corvette joy ride with the airbike cop chase being my favourite bit.

I really like the first 6 movies (yes- ALL of them! Think it's a classic Trek thing, more than anything- and the continuity). 1st Contact was good. |
Re: New star trek movie
First Contact is actually the film that brought me into Star Trek, hadn't really watched it before then, wish they'd hurry up and get it out on blu-ray as I still love watching the opening sequence. Generations did have some cringeworthy moments as you mention although it does have some decent parts as well, I quite liked Soran as a bad guy and still amused by the pan of the shocked crew across the bridge after destroying the bird of prey with Data cheering it. It's funny looking back that the big budget crash in Generations was surpassed in a TV episode of Voyager, similarly I liked the pan out showing that the ice they're walking on is encasing Voyager.
Of the originals I liked 1, 2 and 6 but never thought much of 3, 4 and 5. John |
