I have nothing but admiration for the RMT.One of the few unions who will stand up for the interests of their members.Id join them tomorrow if they were relevant to where I work.I heard their leader Bob Crow debating the issue with Boris Buffoon on Radio Four this morning and I have to say Bob accused Boris of pulling a deal that solved this dispute late yesterday.Boris didnt deny it but only blustered on in his usual way about what a damn nerve working people have standing up for themselves.
If only I belonged to a union with such damn cheek.

Still, I guess the strike's having an effect then ;)

As for selfish, people don't strike for fun. You don't earn any money for a start and being as that's something they're striking for...

Heard a great quote on the radio this morning from a right of centre economist: "they (the strikers) should reaise we're all in this together"

The low paid weren't 'in it together' when the rich were getting richer.

There. That's my contribution. Think I'll disappear to avoid the right wing flaming now.

I dont actually have a problem with workers having rights, but to demand 5% (so an extra £2k in wages) of a pay-rise in the current climate is having a laugh.

Also it seems that more and more the strikes are over some idiot getting sacked for something they should have been sacked for, but the Union not accepting it.

So purely selfish on their parts.

My understanding is that this dispute was effectively settled yesterday afternoon, until Boris Buffoon overuled his managers and decided to take them on and teach the RMT a lesson.Id like to see the whole story come out,but it wont because Boris is a media man,and they will only print his version.
As for the sackings dont start me on that.If the railway is anything like my workplace experiences it will be a haven for inadequate bullying managers who get promotion by getting people disciplined or sacked, often settling personal grudges in the process.Strong unions are the only way to combat this,as the law fails utterly in the real world.
Good luck to them if they are standing up to that sort of thing

I don't know much about the reasons given for the strike, but if the reports of starting salaries of £40k for tube drivers and £29k for platform attendants is true, and that they are requesting increases to this, I'm afraid I don't support them.

I'm all up for unions if used in the right way (although I do question, realistically, how much they are needed what with the rules and regulations available to employees today), but it seems as if this is a corrupt union. The salaries mentioned above are more than equal, so IMO there is no 'fighting for financial equality' here.

Apparently (French guy next to me who commutes from France once a week) in France they cannot strike fully in this way - they have to keep a skeleton service running. "What happens if they don't?" I asked..."they get fired" comes the reply!

It's not right to hold the public to ransom in this way, it's the same as the old "kill 100 to save 1000" dilemma. You can't justify the taking of life in that way, similarly you can't justify affecting the 'innocent public' in this way either.
