I think the best set up is where they warn you that a 30mph zone starts in 300 yards..... 200 yards...... 100 yards

But when I'm out on the bike, or even in the car, it's just unreasonable. So I'm then forced to slow down a lot earlier than I need to. If you can't slow down in time for the 30 sign it's your own fault

as long as you are doing 30 when you reach the 30 sign then that's fine.. just ignore the countdowns...

what naffs me off is speed humps in a 30.. legally i'm entitled to do 30 in a 30 but if i do when there is speed humps i can damage my cage.. there is a village in fife that has a speed hump right at the 30 sign, it has no markings on it and has oil trails leading from it, i have hit the thing at 30 and its not nice... so can i claim off the local council if i damage my cage hitting one of these humps at 30..

Yeah, I think it'd work. Then there really is no excuse...

Why? If the 30 sign is visible that's all you reasonably need. It's been fine that way for years. There are far too many roadside signs already and if you can't spot a 30 zone by a limit sign, street lights, built up area etc.. then you just have to accept the consequenses.

Why should we all have to put up with extra signs just because some people are less observant? Why dumb down something so important? OK in some situations where the signs are not as visible due to topography or road layout, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money and a blot on the lanscape*.

Whats this discussion got to do with taking photos.

I do agree it would work but I do also agree there is a slight essence of stupidity if you can't decide something is a 30...

Not read all this Hovis but dont forget that even if there is no 30mph signage it does not mean its not a 30mph road.
I know of peeps who have tried to argue that there was no signage only to be told that they should know that, for example, "there are street lamps not more than 200 yards apart" then its a 30mph road. Signange isn't always needed and the onus is on you the road user to know what the limit is for the road you are on, not the local Govt to put up relevant signs.

Yeh fair point. They're not strictly needed. The point I was making is that personally I prefer the staggered 30mph set up to the 60,40,30 set up. Just my opinion. I don't have a problem with the extra signs

Brilliant!

Personally i think its better when they reduce it to 40 then 200 yds down the road becomes a 30. Sadly they dont seem to bother much :(.

But they NEVER do that!
They extend the 40 for far longer than necessary ( more limits, more fines & points ? ) and take the fun out of a lot of previously good roads.
Me ? a cynic ? surely not ?

My cage driving instructor deliberately took me down a road where he knew the sign announcing the start of the limit was missing. When I failed to slow for the area he pointed out all the warning signs as Spidey mentioned until I twigged what he meant.

The onus is indeed on you to keep your eyes open and to be aware of your surroundings. Ignorance is no excuse.
