I read it as Tim got the camera with photos of nakedness. And handed it back to the woman so she could delete and format the camera memory card.

I would have made a copy first just in case she backed stabbed you or someone you knew, Just as an insurance policy... ;-)

What Tim said, in a nutshell, was his tip of the day was to format the disk before handing it back with incriminating pics on. Because she obviously didn't. She was then given the camera back and told to format the disk. End of story.

I don't understand why this is confusing people.

Maybe because Tim still hasn't explained if she deleted the photos off the card or not.
Maybe I watch too much TV, but AFAIK after you have deleted electronic data it can still be retrieved if you know how.

Sure tim'll clear this up to, but that was my thinking. 'Deleting' files off media means nothing they're still there, I thought tim meant he'd recovered the files out of curiosity/snoopyness/blackmail material requirements and then given it back to her recommending a format so she knows he knows!

Probably because others are like me and haven't got a clue what he means by "format". Personally if I was ever stupid enough to borrow a camera, and then stupid enough to have an affair, and then even more stupid enough to take photos of it.....then I'd probably also be stupid enough to not know how to "format" something....

I guess I must be stupid!

That's my understanding. "Deleting" files means that they are tagged as available to be overwritten. They remain on the media until the media is formatted or the OS choses to overwrite the tagged files.

Am I wrong?

Nope, and even a quick format won't do anything to them expect wiping the record that says where in the disk those files were stored, effectively marking the disk as clean even though the files are still there and recoverable. Only a low-level format will erase them (by overwriting them with blank data), and even then they might still be recoverable by specialised forensics software.

Glad I'm not alone then :D
To return the camera without deleting the pictures would be foolish, but not many people would know to format it -and even Phillypie is on about different forms of formating

I'm the keeper of the digital camera at my place...I keep hoping something like this would happen just for the level of banter which would happen afterwards, but alas all I get is pictures of roundabouts and traffic lights! :(

I would have at least sent one around the office saying something like "where's wally!"

She has simply run the media format on the camera. I guess this would leave the files behind if I had something that would read the flash card as if it were a disk. No I do not wish to get them. I will probably give her the card and tell her to destroy it.

For my own personal PC I use eraser. I am advised that it should stop those pesky feds snooping with 7 times overwrite etc.
