yeah my drive/fan sounds like it is trying to take off sometimes.

The DVD drive is the noisiest part - install a game to the hard drive for better performance and less noise. When you quit to dashboard from a game running off DVD you'll hear the DVD drive shut down and the reduction of noise is ridiculous.

My drive, though would make a loud grindy noise whenever it started doing something. Turning the 360 on, for example, or putting a new disc in and closing the door. My previous 360 made a similar noise before it first RROD'd so when they fixed the RROD they also replaced the optical drive. It then slowly wore out until I started having the grindy noise again, just prior to this more recent return for service.

You can carry on with it as it is (random freezes and hoping it'll RROD) or you can just bite the bullet and having it repaired by MS.
