Re: Help please... possible CCT problem

Hard to tell from the vids but does sound like the CC problem on the K5 I had. FWIW, I put a new CCT on, only to have to renew the CC itself. Not a majorly difficult job, although does require dropping of the coolant, oil, new gasket seals, something to remove the stator etc. It's more of a time consuming job than rocket science and I did have the mechanical know how of YC to guide me.

I'm not familiar with the curvy/manual CCT's, however have a spare pointy/automatic CCT if you're interested.

EDIT: It costs around £150 from memory to renew the cam chain and all the gaskets (pointy).

Cheers. I will try and get a second opinion first before I do anything as the video isn't the best quality. Hopefully it's not in need of a new CC, can't afford that right now. Its actually louder in the video than it is in person, but its definately a new, louder noise than normal. What condition is the spare CCT you have? Is it a direct fit on to the Curvy?

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem

Don't know about the direct fit, I 'think' it is, but there's lots of info on here if you search.

It's a front CCT and as far as I know, it's in good condition. As I said, I replaced it with a new one on the K5, however I still had the rattle. I replaced the cam chain itself and the rattle went, therefore the cam chain must have been fubard.

You're welcome to try it on a sale or return basis if you want, at least it might rule out the CCT one way or the other.

Just in case you want to have a look.

While searching the net for info on CCTs I came across someone saying that pushing the bike backwards, whilst in gear, can sometimes fix the problem. However the fix may not last long. It could start rattling again within days. I'm going to read through my Haynes manual tomorrow but would grately appreciate it if someone wouldn't mind helping me out if they do need replacing.

I remember Zadar saying that is NOT a good idea to replace the auto CCT with a manual one. Main reason being is that they wear very quickly as most of them are not made very well. He posted a picture of a line of 6 and only one wasn't worn badly!

He says the standard ones are fine. It might be that the rachet mechanism is stuck from what I remember being posted before.

Here you go.

Zadar has never seen one fail in 11years, its possibly just a plate in the CCT rattling, according to Zadar's knowledge

I quickly decided against buying a manual CCT but thanks for the heads up anyway. I'm going to take the CCT out and clean it up once I have the tools as like I said earlier, the rattle/tapping noise isn't as loud in person as it is in the video. The 2nd video (Warm) is more like what it sounds in person.

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem

It's been a while since I posted anything else about this noise. I took my bike down to my local family run garage the other week and when I arrived the noise had completely gone. It's come back again but not as loud and I can definitely say that it's coming front he rear cylinder area as the noise is loudest when you put your head near the rear wheel/shock area.

The noise keeps coming and going, and because the mechanic I trust is away on holiday I have no way of getting a 2nd opinion from someone who isn't just going to say anything to get money from me. If it is a sticking tensioner could someone show me how to check this if they have any spare time.

I have read through my Haynes Manual but dont fully understand it, plus not being very mechanically compotent probably has something to do with it aswell. I want to be able to work on my own bike and not just have a garage to do all the work but I don't want to dive into something if I'm not 100% sure no matter how simple it may seem.

Like I said the noise comes and goes and isn't overly loud but sometimes it can be heard over the engine when doing less than 40mph at roughly 4000RPM, but I would have thought it would get louder the higher the engine revs. When I do hear the tapping noise at roughly 4000RPM just by going up to 4500RPM seems to stop the noise. And yes I have checked stuff for lose screws which may cause the rattling but haven't seen anything. Although I did find a nice big screw in my rear tyre the other day, I wasn't very happy.

Just a very quick question before I go ahead and sort out my CCT tomorrow. Can I retract the tensioners push rod thing without taking it off the bike? That's if I can get a screw driver in there, to hopefully unstick it.

Thanks in advance, and you won't be hearing from me again about this, unless something doesn't go to plan.

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem

It's hard to diagnose a noise from a video, sorry.

If it is a bit of a rattle that's coming and going it's probably the guide piece in the tensioner rattling, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Resetting the tensioner does not fix this.
