Maybe if you lived somewhere with 100 days more of sun you would be riding more and spending less time tinkering? If I ever buy a pointy I will learn from you, never mind, stay where you are.

far to many m8 but lets say you name it i've done it apart from a big bore. ooohhh and i ride about 10,000 miles a year which is not bad going since i only get out on sundays and put the bike away for winter which is end of October till end of March :-)

That's not to bad, I think that's more than me, I get out each wedensday and do about 70-100km, but only on days with sun/dry tarmac, it's the go-cart track thingy. Once or twice a year I take the bike away for courses, around 250km each way, company pays £0.4 for each km :D
Then I go away for a few days in the van with my trackday bike to some nice big track somewhere in europe and do 2-5 days of high speed fun.

I'm not looking for any gains in HP from doing the service, just want the bike to be running as sweet and efficient as possible, and if that means the smallest gain in MPG then all the better.

I suppose the gist of what most people are saying is that the OEM parts are fine but if I can get the iridium plugs etc for a good price than it will do no harm to fit them.

Regarding filters, I'm quite satisfied with OEM, mahle and Hiflo oil filters. I have seen issues with the no-name cheapy stuff though and don't recommend.

OE air filter is fine, so is the K+N road. They do offer benefits if you do mileage as they can be cleaned. The K+N service kit isn't dear and will do 4 or 5 filter cleanings and oilings.


BMC race RS on mine.

Not sure whether you mean a proper race filter being a pair of tights or similar but my engine has over 100k, the race RS went on at about 30k.

Dunno if that is of any evidential value for anyone who wants to get proper high mileage life out of their engine or who rides in particularly dusty conditions but fine for my light use.

A mc mech I talk to once every so often told me he could spot the bikes that rides often in a pair of subseabed tunnels we have outside Stavanger, their airfilters where always black, my bmc is nearly never dirty, and I don't go into smog filled cities or long tunnels on a regular basis. I guess the inviroment you drive in on a regular basis has a lot to say on what air you and your bike suck in, and how often you should service/change the airfilter. "Proper" oldskoolcool races bikes dind't use airfilters, big size bellmouths, sucked right through, didn't hurt them.

Finally got round to ordering the bits for a service. Just gone for the standard air and oil filters (£24 ebay) and got 4litres of oil from Hein Gericke (£19.99 with a 20% discount, not sure if thats due to them closing down or an offer that was already on). Also decided on the iridium spark plugs (£11.90 ebay) as there wasn't much difference price wise between them and standard.

I couldn't be cheeky and ask if anyone localish to me has an oil filter wrench fitting and the spark plug socket for the SV that I could borrow to do the job. Had a look for the tool kit on my bike last week and discovered the compartment where it should have been has been hacked off (presumably the bike has had a different rear shock fitted in the past).

And to be doublely cheeky, I'd like to check the valve clearances and throttle bodies allignment at the same time but I'm not 100% confident in doing them. Would somebody be willing to 'look over my shoulder' while I attempt to check them and offer a bit of guidance and help (and pressure guages lol)? Don't like to ask really but the plan is that once I've done it once and am happy doing it then I can spend the money saved from taking it to the dealers on the proper tools (pressure guages etc) and then to do the same for somebody else!
