well i think that answers your question. it sounds like you could have a fubar clutch switch. i would start by replacing the switch and go from there.

But the clutch switch kills everything completely. It doesn't explain the problem I was having before this does it?

simple. bypass the switch and see how you get on.

Right. Just a bit of metal across the two contacts? And is that the wore ends, not the two contacts on the bottom of the lever?

unplug the connector and bridge the two cables. if the switch is found to be the cause then i would seriously recommend you buy a new one. if its not then carry on with your investigations.
