think about where the rubber is compressed under the tyre when it's trying to grip - towards the back of the contact patch on the rear when accelerating, & towards the front of the contact patch on the front whren braking. rather like starting blocks in a running race, or digging your heels in to stop yourself being pulled frowards

hmm yeah i think i see what you mean - you are saying that because (within the contact patch) the most pressure is towards the front of the path (when braking, on the front wheel), that during slowing down when that pressure is (hopefully) constantly easing up, it could be that essentially the tyre is going backwards...it would have to be going "backward" enough to counteract the "actual" going forward though. i'll see if i can find some info on the net, unless anyone has a clip of it in action, or a moving diagram, i think i'll struggle to really believe it

haha, well i personally just wanted to confirm other people had backwards tyres...mine could have been moulded wrong! (yes yes i know it's unlikely :P )

It's a manufacturer thing the tread goes round the right way, your term not mine, on Bridgestones and when the front starts to wear you get uneven levels from one contact patch to the next does not affect the handling thugh it's just the wat it wears because tthe tread pattern is the other way round.

Agree with the above, but it's also worth noting that of all the factors that have an effect on wet grip (tread depth, tyre profile, %area of tread vs contact patch, tempertature of the rubber, ruber/silica compound etc) Tread pattern is considered the least important, so most manufacturers like to make their tyres fairly distinctive.
