Re: Front Sprocket Removal Help

All good suggestions(mostly ;) ) so far but everyone should have an 12 Volts Electric impact wrench in their tool kit.

Mine cost me either £9.99 or £14.99(can't remember which) from halfords(thousands of years ago). A God send for working my scooter...no sniggering at the back  :p

Cheers
Ben

Yes well an air impact wrench may be the way forward, however a guy has offered to change sprockets and chain for £30 whereas to just rivet the chain was a £15 job (mobile guy - comes to house).

Rather than fart around this time, might just give him the job, go and get a new tab washer and wait on the result.

I must say though that the whole servicing process this time around (and last time) has been a thoroughly rewarding experience. I have undertaken jobs which I have never done before and found them pretty easy to do. The only fear I have is fear of the unknown.

The nut isnt shifting - stuck solid even with a 5ft breaker bar on there. Darent put any more force on incase something else gives before the nut!

Yes, you're supposed to replace the lock tab washer every nut undoing I believe.

I used about a 5 -6 ft breaker bar. That nut had been on there from new and wasn't touched until I undid it at 15k miles and over 5years old.

Just grit your teeth and go for it Rob. :D

Just put some penetrating fluid on it for tonight. Will return to it tomorrow methinks for one final push

Its a bit odd that they dont provide a new washer int he C&S kit in that case

had another go this morning, still wont budge an inch. Thinks Ill just pay the £30 and get it done for me. Too bloody difficult to get off and I dont have an impact wrench available.

On a side, phoned the local bike shop this morn for a new lock washer - they have to order them in at a couple of quid a time!? Are they as expensive as this? I thought it was just a generic washer??

It's not a generic washer but should cost less than £1.20 ;)

Front sprockets come in 2 flavours: finger tight and welded on. Best of luck.

Sometimes it is best to concede defeat before it all ends in tears.

It would be helpful to you though if you could watch the mechanic as he undoes it. Should help the next time.
