Doesn't really bode well for your bike does it? Thought of getting a blue one or something jsut to be on the safe side?! :p

My MG has a radio/tape player... unfortunately it's been so long since she was on teh road that I'm fairly certain I've forgotton the PIN for when I put the faceplate back on the stereo

Oh well - guess I'll just have to put a new CD player in... or something I can hook my iPod into.

i thought you could download in a lossless format now?! you ever tried SACD?

Yeah- there is a new lossless format- I have an 'evaluation' edition of the new J-M Jarre album on it- it sounds good (regardless of what you may think of the French Electronic One). So many people still seem more keen on MP3 though. I've noticed some online sample stores charge a huge handling fee for ordering wavs, regardless of the cost of each file you're getting.

I have the new edition of War of the Worlds on SACD hybrid. The new CD master of it is horrible- all maximised volume and less clarity. The SACD stereo mix is lovely- clear and smooth. Sadly, my home cinema amp doesn't do seperate channel analogue ins, so I can't listen to the 5.1 mix now (took it to a friend's though- it's sublime, How the album always should have been mixed).

I'm going to be after Dark Side of the Moon next for SACD. Sweet!

Not cheap at £99.95 though! :|

Personally... I'd just gonna keep an old portable cassette player just incase I ever want to listen to something!

Was about to post this. Damn, could have been my first scoop.
Must say tho only saw this in a mag in the dentists waiting room before I'm accused of geekery :smt120

We should have a whipround and get a communal MP3-tape deck thing, and all do our old stuff :) There's a USB turntable out there too. Or, you could just plug an ordinary one into the mic socket of your PC, but that'd probably be rubbish unless you've got a good soundcard. ISTR that the PC/deck thing there just does that at the end of the day though, could be wrong.

I don't understand why everyone's so mad over rubbish MP3 either, why you'd pay money for anything less than a lossless format I don't know. It's like buying music on some sort of etched wax disc, or similiar madness. But these days I barely listen to CDs, I just rip them when I get them to a good MP3 and listen to that.

Damn - the plastic boxes were always good for scraping an icy car window on a cold winter morning :(

I've got all my CDs stored in MP3 format - frankly at 224 I find there's no audible difference in quality on a domestic system and for going "Lossless" - Apple lossless is exactly that. Compare it against the original and there is no difference. Still tend to buy CDs rather than downloads though - I find it works out cheaper & I still have the CDs as a backup if the computer goes TU.

I'm also against the effect MP3 has had on the consumer formats- everybody seems so keen now to download MP3s instead of getting the CD, despite the drop in quality. Again, it's handy for a portable music format or just having loads of songs on the hard disc, but we have an age where we're all going goofy about HDTV and the next generation of video playback or games consoles, but seem to be devolving the music playback quality. It's crazy.

I know it's the songs that are important, but why ditch CD's completely for a lesser format? With no covers and artwork to study while you listen to an album for the first time. Where's the magic in that?

Though I'm sure everyone resents having to buy the music again in every new format- like movies. I'm perfectly happy with DVD at the moment, though have seen Casino Royale in HD and it rocks.

Though I'll never buy a Star Wars movie again- and don't get me started on that whole kettle of marine life

MP3's can contain less audio information than physical mediums like CDs, but please don't delude yourself.

If you have a decent hifi, playing a CD, you're getting no more than 256k bitrate out of the speakers. MP3's can be found in 360kbps.

If I transfer something from CD to MP3, I use 256k. I would never be able to hear 192kbps on my speakers, but I store it in 256k.

The best hi-fi systems on the planet (designed for home use) would be lucky at best to get 320kbps output.

MP3 is not necessarily a poor format choice, the compression ratio is where bad decisions are made.

That said, if I like the music, I'll go to the shop & buy the CD, not really for the artwork, but more to support the artist(s) I like.

I arrived at 256k by trying assorted bitrates, till I found one that I was pretty sure was no better than the one below. Then I went up one more jump, just in case :) Worked a charm...
