Re: Pedestrians, especially children...
1. Eyes don't see you
2. Eyes see you but brain doesn't register. The brain expects to see a larger object like a car, van or wagon, when it's not there they cross. Ever seen a pedestrian do a double take at you when half way across then start running? It's the brain registering the fact that there was actually something there the first time they looked and they suddenly get brown trousers. 3. Brain makes a split second risk assesment, risk vs impatience. The subconcious tells you that a bike is smaller so less likely to hit you and will hurt less if it does. Concious thought about the fact you just walked out in front of a 30mph 300kg, bike would make the same person feel stupid afterwards. If they double take and get brown trousers half way across they were just a bit quicker with the concious thought and realise they made a stupid decision. Kids are kids, all of the above with even less attention paid to the traffic and a less developed ability to take a sensible decision. Same applies to car drivers pulling out of a junction. Hapens all the time on the bike, but much less often in the car. If someone walks out on you in the car, they usually didn't look or were ****ed. This lazy brain action doesn't happen to bikers crossing the road anywhere near as often. It's why I think a year on a moped should be prerequisite to getting a car license. |

Re: Pedestrians, especially children...
combination of both maybe, the 16 to 17 is fine but also some decent miles with it (although dont know how you would prove the miles though as some wee cheeky chappies might register and do nowt for a year)

Re: Pedestrians, especially children...
That and its extra cost, why should you have to pay for a scooter for a year that you don't want?
Can't really see many 16 year olds turning down the use of transport though. |
Re: Pedestrians, especially children...
of course pedestrians have the right of way if they have earphones in.

Re: Pedestrians, especially children...
I was once riding along Albany Road in Cardiff about a year ago on my way home in the pouring rain. I never filter down this road as most drivers have their brains removed the moment they turn onto it!
So there I am in a line of traffic, doing about 10mph with a good gap to the car in front. On the other side of the road the traffic is stationary. All of a sudden this woman steps out from behind a van in the queue. She wasn't even looking at me - I had about 5 foot to stop in. Slammed the brakes on - don't think I've ever stopped so quickly. Of course then as I stop I haven't got my foot down and almost drop the bike. As you can imagine, I'm not happy and started shouting at her. She turns and looks at me, then shouts "Road rage, help I'm being attacked - officer officer". Now I'm confused - looked over my shoulder to see a cop stood on the pavement. He wanders over to use and asks me to move the bike to the side of the road. He asks her describe exactly what happened - apparently I was diving in and out of cars and then she had to dive out of the way before I started to abuse her." Bull****" says the cop, " I saw everything - you stepped out in front of this guy" he then proceded to give her a 5 minute road safety lecture. Having sent her on his way he turned to me. Commented on riding in the extreme weather - I replied about commuting to work. At which point he replies "yeah I know what you mean - I use my GPZ500 everyday for getting to work" - bonus, another biker. Had a 5 minute chat with him at the side of the road. He had a Gixxer for his summer toy - he was telling me his opinions on tinted visors - and how they should be allowed!!! Gotta say he was a thouroughly nice chap. |
