when i was living with my parents after finishing uni i payed 100 pounds a week. My little brother is paying 200 a month as he is on an apprentiship and is earning 600 a month. I would say 200 is about right, it will teach him about money.

If you think this is too much then charge him it anyway and put the extra over what you thought was ok away in a high interest account and them when he finishes give it to him to make a large purchase for something he needs. basicaly a car or house. If you can afford it then put all of it into an account for him when he gets done and he will be very very happy with you.

If you don't really need the money from him and are just charging him as "character building" and to stop him being a sponger, you could do what one of my friend's parents do and charge him comparatively quite a lot, but whack it in a savings account. The idea being you will release this to him as a deposit for him to buy his own place in a couple of years. Gets him out of your hair sooner! When I was living at home I was paying rent (apart from my final year at uni). This varied according to where I was working/how much I was being paid. I think it was just over £300 per month (including food and all bills) once I had a "proper" job. I think that was fair, I wasn't costing my parents anything to be there and it allowed me to save up a bit to get my own place.

I'm not a parent, but personally I'd not let my kids live rent free at my place once they were working, if only because in the long run it's not going to do them any favours IMO(unless the money is being saved for something beneficial).

This is a great idea but perhaps a little too much, more like £300 a month. This is a reasonable amount plus he'll get some savings without even realising!

£200 is a fair amount, thats how much I had to pay recently. If you want you can save a bit of that for him at end but I think that doesnt teach the value of the money he is earning.
if he thinks £200 is too much then ask him to find out how much it cost to rent a room in the area + food + utilities and im sure it will be much more!

I must be really soft. I'm only charging my 2 £80 each a month. I wouldnt mind but my son earns more than I do :o
