I'd disagree with you there, it all depends on the value of your bike. If you have some old minger that's just hanging together with string and snot and looks like a blind monkey painted it in the rain with a mouthful of Dulux and a straw then fair enough, TPF+T is the way to go - but some of us have bikes worth a little more than that and the repair costs to get them back to immaculate are considerably higher.

My SVS K5 was very nearly written off in January, all my own fault. £2500 worth of damage made me think it was worth claiming, especially as I have protected no claims. I got a cheque for 1600 quid to do the repairs myself so as to keep costs down after coming to an arrangement with the engineer who examined it; I did all the repairs myself for a total of half that sum, including buying complete brand new upper and lower fairings from Steve Jordan's.

If you play it right you can benefit from having FC insurance, and in my case I don't pay much more of a premium than TPF+T would be.

If the repair costs had been under 500 quid I wouldn't have bothered claiming though, I'd have just fixed it out of my own pocket.

Very sorry to hear about this. The excess (not to mention the additional premium hike for the next couple of years) costing more than it would cost you to fix the problem and hence it not making fiscal sense to claim is one of the reasons I steer clear of fully comp, except in situations where it only costs fractionally more than TPFT (and even then, I'd primarily get it to pay for any injuries sustained during an accident). I did the maths for the rate I was charged and for the SV, I'd have to write off a bike every 2 years, with it being my fault (and if I did that, I shouldn't be riding in the first place IMO! :)) for it to be worthwhile. This is particularly true on a budget bike like an SV, which is usually cheaper to repair than most policies' excess.

Protected no claims is what clinches it, for anyone younger, if you claim once it'll be prohibitively expensive for the next 5 years, you'll end up paying back double whatever you were paid out!

Right guys. Good news and bad news.

Most stuff I was told about the damage was bull**** - there was absolutely no damage to the fairing or body and stuff - it was never dropped, the bike was put back on its stand by the thievs.

Bad news: As you can see in the pic, they broke the yoke as they must have forcefully unlocked the steering. I have no clue how to repair that myself- and my budget will not allow for professional help.

Bad news: There is no way I will get aroung the £105+VAT for the towing. *******s.

Good news: As you can see from the pics, I doubt the bike has even been ridden, saying the cables are not even connected!!!

Very very irritating news: They would not let me have my bike because apparently it has been involved in a burglary and therefore the police has to take finger prints and they have not done that yet. So I get my friend to not go to work and help me get my bike with his van, and then they say I can't have my own bike. :smt013 What the hell.

But overall I think I had a lot of luck. I will certainly call the police back now and ask them why on earth they find it funny to a) give me false information and b) not tell me that so much needs doing to it!!!
