After reading this thread I have D/L Ubuntu & am running it now :)
I tried Mandriva while I was off (The full 4 gb) & made a complete mess of my p.c, having to reformat it, but this is brilliant, I'm well impressed. I'm going to try it for another few days & have a play, if it works well, then BYE BYE Mr Gates :)
Cheers Jayney for starting this thread.

You are welcome, although I started it to ask for help from the lovely people of the Org, so I guess I should say thanks to every one who helped me set the new OS up.

Remind me never to annoy Soulkiss, he will hack my system and download nasty things to my screen saver!

I think Ubuntu is very pleasing on the eye, soft colours and pretty effects. Windows always looks so clinical and complex. Yes it does work, but it lacks the aesthetic beauty of Linux and sometimes, it can be a real git when it goes wrong. At least with Linux you stand a chance of fixing a problem.

Anyway y'all, enjoy Linux and may all of your PC problems be simple ones.

Hugs,

Jayne

A lot of the linux distributions now automount stuff. I use ubuntu - if I connect a USB memory stick, camera or whatever, it just pops up a mounted drive automagically. You may want to give it another try. You can just run it directly from the CD without it touching your hard drive if you want to just try it out. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

And yes, the forums are just brill.

I've used PCLinuxOS for 3 years now (after trying just about every distro on the market) and it does everything that Windoze does, right out the box. I even run XP in VMWare on it so I can continue to use Premier Pro for video editing.

The online PCLinusOS community is by far the most user freindly bunch I've encountered in the IT sector. They seem to have a real passion for the OS that's a whole Polar Region away from the stuffy and elitist groups found on a lot of the other Linux sites.

PCLOS FTW!!

Yeah! My old museum piece P233 laptop quite happily runs Zenwalk with 128mb RAM and a 6G HD.

Linux rules.
