I think it depends on a load of different factors Gid. Dave never used any oil at all at first, I was hammering it down the peages in France and never had to top up in 2500 miles. Since over filling and it forcing itself out of the clutch housing bolts, it looses it when caning the ass off it for miles and miles on a motorway. If you don't have a disturbance factor in there it depends on how the rider rides the bike and such

I managed to damage Suzys front cylinder cam bearings by lack of knowledge (and because of knowledgeable other halves putting impact drivers through alternator plugs:smt076) in the dead of winter to and from work in the dark, you never think to look at your oil level ...oops. It cost me a lot of money, and so far the couple of hundred miles I've ridden her with 'bikedolfs' engine the level hasn't changed ... even with varying riding situations

and yet when pete used that engine, he would top up the oil most days on rideouts....

I would also say that Speedy's SV used hardy any oil on our trip round Europe (3300 miles) EXCEPT for two days where oil went from full to low in a day! Daily bike check caught this before damage was done.

My SV never used any oil, the VFR does not use oil.

So it shows oil consumption is very variable depending on all sorts of variables.

exactly, Pete makes his bike 'work' for its keep, I'm pretty sedate most of the time, but don't hang about in a straight line
Pete also had two up all the time so again another different reason, I never do....well apart from Gladys that is;)

Mine loses basically none at all, except when it's got a leak that is, which is always. But it doesn't burn any.

My old SV didnt really use much oil. I only had to top it up once and it was only on the bottom line then in 25K miles (with services done obviously).

The thing is with big pistons and high revs you get sealing issues and some oil will get through... so the more you thrash it the more oil will find itsway out of the engine past the piston rings etc.

Plus high revs vaporises more oil and spits it out of the engine breathers.

Mine uses noticeably more when riding it properly.

It involves exhaust pipes :-?

Oil costs about £25 for 4 liters semi-synth 10w40 from my local bike shop for putoline. Good oil. :)
