most people will $hit themselves wayyy before balance point. But still, rolling off throttle on SV will almost (almost!) certainly plonk the front down. Cover the back brake, just in case.

this is just what my mate captain jack taught me, and as stated noone gets there first wheelie that high anyway and everyone learns to just roll the throttle off when wanting to lower the wheelie, grabbing the clutch will bring lose engine power and slam the front wheel down i was told but i dont do wheelies so im no expert.

As YC said, the engine braking on an SV is awesome and has saved my ass a few times, but if you pull in the clutch you lose that engine brake and with nothing else stopping you from rolling over backwards its bye bye shiny bike, hello ****box.
Its best to train your foot to press on the brake when you get too high. Don't sit penguin footed like you see on a lot of the bike mags. |

never knew that about going over backwards but i never get them that high so no worries for me :)

if you could do wheelies on bmx's and mtb's for as long as you like , then you should be able to wheelie anything , from a c70 to a cbr1000 , its all about balance and the point of no return !! covering the rear brake is proberly the best bit of advice , but be aware at some stage you will flip a bike, its gonna happen if you do wheelies all the time , good luck though when you master it they are fun , OH and be aware mr plod hates them !!

davido what technique would you recommend?; slipping the clutch at midish revs in first, bursting the throttle or clutch>revs>dump clutch>roll off throttle?

Use first gear. More engine brake that way and it'll teach you to get the bike up quickly because you'll run out of revs quicker than any other gear.
Roll along slowly. Dip clutch, give it a rev, drop clutch. If it lurches forward, be more aggressive with the clutch. If it comes up but not high enough, keep slowly increasing the amount of gas you give it. Look ahead so you can judge your height. Use your foot to bring you down rather than shutting the throttle as it'll train your foot to work when you want it to. Its quite hard to explain, but once you get the technique down you'll be having loads of fun. :) |
