I used to be great with Spiders....a right little Gerald Durell I was as a child. Then one day, found the usually massive house spider in the sink, stopping my arachnaphobic sister from getting into the bath. I went it, picked it up and it was really quite big, so being a 9 year old weirdo, I called it Alfred and took it to see my mum. Cupped it in my hand, walked dowsntairs to mum and it was gone. Didn't think much of it and went back upstairs. Used to run upstairs on my hands and feet (no idea why) and three steps from the top, Alfred appeared over my right eye. I stopped dead, Alfred stopped dead and I could just see a blurred close up of the underneath of his head, fangs and pedipalps moving back and forth. I SCREEEEAAAAMMMMMED, mum came running, sister splashed half the water out of the bath and I've liked to maintain a distance between myself and spiders ever since.

Not forgetting a few years ago, taking a drink out of a glass of doctor pepper I had by the bed one morning and something hit my tongue. Looked in the glass and it was a dead wolf spider. Needless to say, I had to run to the bathroom...quickly!

They are fascinating and I love to watch them, just don't want to get too close.

If some look quite dangerous, could it be because of their pedipalps? When Male Spiders are ready for mating, they develop sacks at the tips of their pedipalps to hold sperm. They can look really mean when they have them.

In both these pics you can see the pedipalps, the small legs at the front of the head are enlarged because they are ready to mate and full of sperm. When spiders are in this state, they can look mean as anything.

If you can.....as Woz said, take pics so we can see!

And I didn't even mention that I froze on the stairs, mum ran up to me and the Spider had retreated into my ridiculously long hair! 30 seconds later, Alfred ran out of my hair, up mums arm and got swiftly flung away, ending up at the bottom of the stairs.

To this day, I just don't like them to touch me. I can look at them, I have even caught ladybird larvae to feed one that used to live in my old house.....it became like another pet......I just don't want to touch them!

I used to have my Tarantula tank just above the head board of my bed, which played havoc with my then boyfriends libido. He was arachnophobic, but because he loved me, he bought me a new tank for her when she grew to six inches and needed a new home.

Carol is a bit of a rat bag though and wont allow me to have another Spider. I think that this is because she very mean and hates me. Might have to give her a damn good beating with a shoe!
