How was that broken down?. No point having a quote without a breakdown of what that covers. If its check and adjust clearances, oil/oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, throttle body balance etc etc then thats a very fair quote.

For that list* I think it's a bloody rip off. I'd guess that at 4 hours or so and what £35 of parts.
But for that mileage I'd expect it to need a full service of calipers front and rear and chassis bearings too.

Also how does how far out the throttle bodies are affect the price? I've not noticed much more than 30 seconds more work on adjusting the balance between some that are a yard out or an inch ;)

*N.B that is not me saying your list for the same price is not much more comprehensive

But Ben everyone knows full well that all tradesmen, mechanics and builders do a crap job and rip you off and that every dealer is a stealer who's only there to take your hard earned while lining their pockets.

And above all everyone knows not one of them deserves a decent wage.

So what should a main dealer charge for 5 hours work?. Taking into account they have a fully trained tech on the bench thats earning £25k a year in premises that cost £52k a year to rent, plus £10k a year in liability insurance, plus heating, electric, phones, rates, tax and not even taking into account investment in tools, manuals.

Define rip off?. When we charge £60 inc Vat per hour with those overheads or an independant charges £40 per hour and works out of his back garden shed.:smt104

Our costs have to be justifed and i constantly check them each and every month. If I didnt then we wouldnt trade, simple. A business needs to earn money to survive and pay its staff. I not sure why the motorcycle trade gets tarnished with such nievity all the time, sure some places you could possibly justify that they rip you off but not all off them.

I earn £20k a year doing this and Steve little more. I could be earning £30k pen pushing in the city charging some fat businessman four times an hour more than what I do now. Im sure also there are plenty that judge us that do just the same.

Ian, all they do is flick spanners, screw drivers and trowels etc, all day long surely...how difficult can that be?

Wonder how many of the folks that scream the loudest have ever had a day of self employment in the live.

Meh!! You are paying your Techs too much, move to a cheaper area, change suppliers, get wood fire for heating....you get the gist

What's wrong with making all your tools from scrap metal picked up from emm you guessed it, the scrap metal merchant?

What mileage should the first check be? I'm on 14500 and I've never done the clearances.

And there folks, is the sort of attention to detail, you don't get from your "ten pounds per hour tree shade garage" :p
