I see 30mpg + from my connect but it is a lot smaller engine and body.
I did have a brand new transit on hire for two weeks while mine was repaired and that was a quick van, but like you say struggled to get more than about 27 mpg.
Thats partly the reason why i dont wanna upgrade my connect although i could do with a bigger van.
