try this-get one of your mates to "arm" himself with an object meant to be a knife, get him to attack you with it and try to avoid being hit -you'll find that its almost impossible to avoid getting hit -hence why the firearm guys are called in.

Anyone into martial arts, give it a go with a T shirt and a marker pen as the "knife". Find very quickly that a lot of the eastern stuff about defending yourself against a knife is a load of BS and that's in the open.
From what I read the majority of stabbings the knife comes from nowhere, if someone shows you a knife they don't intend to stab you with it.*


*Not that this should in any way affect whether you should shoot someone repeatedly if they're waving a knife at you, as they still might, so the reasonable force is still a deadly one.

Done it before with rubber knives with lipstick on. You get covered in it trying to block.

There's a chance anyway a wounded cracked up knife wielding C**t wouldn't be 'stopped' by a non lethal shot anyway, bullet will no doubt pass straight through, even in the torso.

Perfectly justified IMO, he deserves a medal, how many could take that shot in those circumstances ?

had 2-3 close encounters with knives when i was in the Met - real scary s**t - not a hero i can tell you, but in all honestly I think i would rather take my chances against a hand gun (but not a shotgun!!!) - a knife is way too indiscriminate.

so from experience if someone was waving one around and you had a shooter would you use it?

to be honest it really has to depend on the "imminent" danger to life - you have only seconds to react, but possibly a lifetime to reflect - now that i'm safely retired I can pass the buck to those who now have to make those decisions - in essence if armed then the objective would be to neutralise the danger - shoot the bugger.....

In the end of the day, the fella threatened someone else's life and paid for it with his own.

If you're prepared to intentionally threaten someone's life, then my view is you should be prepared to gamble with your own.

I'm aware some people might say, "Well what about drunk drivers?" etc as they are deemed to be risking people's lives with their behaviour, but to me, when someone pulls a knife, gun or puts someone else in a life threatening situation, purely out of malice or to rob etc, then they need to be prepared to forfeit their right to life.

I think the phrase I would use to sum this up: "You pays your money, you takes your chances."

This guy was in N.I, he knows the cops are armed, both on and off duty (it's not overly nice being a cop in N.I) and he knows the risk he is taking by carrying out an armed robbery. Plus the fact, and DP will correct me if I am wrong here, he will have been aware there were possible repercussions of his actions from other fraternities which may have been far more inhumane than his death.

I feel for the cop. Not a nice thing to have to live with.
