worth doing?

I would say yes for sure......well I certainly would....

If the initial application is with an agency - should always follow up with a call.
If it is with the company direct or council etc then you can easily put in a very polite call to their HR department.

Good luck and hope it works out.

Honesty is me so that's not an issue. However, I've recently applied for a job I actually really want, I painstakingly pored over my application and it didn't take as long as it normally would because everything I wrote just flowed easily. I'd hope it was obvious I'd written it from the heart so to speak, but I'm wondering if it's worth following it up with a phonecall to draw attention to my name...worth doing?

Oh god yes... Before I got home from the interview for my current job I had been sent an automated email saying I had been unsuccesful.

The interview went amazing, so I called everyday to find out what had gone wrong. I struggled to get to speak to anyone. At the time it was a small division of one of the biggest companies in the world with very few employees. In the end ut turned out it was sent in error because HR Admin had fat fingers.

If you don't call up for feedback you will never know. It at the very least shows your keen.

In fact... call them right now if it's been over 1 week!

Don't know if I've got an interview yet, was going to ring them before the app deadline. Can't hurt.

Also, when writing non CV applications, aren't there particular words, phrases and such that potential employers will be looking out for in your text to tick off their boxes?

There are:

Awesome

Best in my field

Problem solver

Target motivated

More commonly known as Lozzo

Any of those will instantly get you the job :D
