Don't worry about the rating 150kg will be fine, the cable only pulls the trailer, it does not lift the weight on the trailer.

Use the cable they are rated considerably higher than you think!

WB - from this gov website:

A breakaway cable is a thin cable that will pull on the brakes of a braked trailer. On an unbraked trailer, use a short strong cable or chain to keep the trailer attached to your car. The cable will prevent the nose of the trailer from touching the ground if it’s separated from the car.

So it's not to pull the trailer, just to stop the hitch from hitting the ground & flying off somewhere.

It will be to pull the trailer, unless you are planning on stopping within a nanosecond of the trailer/tow hitch failing!

In fact I may have some suitable cable in the cellar that was for installing a lift motor.

Well OK, yeah it pulls the trailer but doesn't need to be massively rated 'cos you'd hopefully notice that something was wrong & slowly come to a stop.

I only really looked it up 'cos I knew caravans have one to pull the brakes on so I was wondering why it was necessary on an unbraked trailer. It seems the important bit is the length of the cable

Righto thanks for that, I shall get on with that this weekend if I have time as I have to go to exeter first thing sat.

It should be ready for a road test with a bike next weekend if I get the last little bits of welling done and some paint slapped on in the week

Got back from road test about an hour ago. Tows well but there is no way in hell im putting 2 road bikes on it at once, maybe two crossers but that's my limit. nothing really wrong with it I just don't think i would feel comfortable towing 2 bikes I'd rather shuv them in the van.

Towed it about 3 miles on really rough country roads and it moved slightly, the addition of another racket strapped solved this solved this so off on the motorway i went. Did about 10 miles, bike didn't move, trailer didn't snake or bounce, everything went well :).
