I pretty much accepted the first offer from the third party insurers... got an extra £25 or so for the scottoiler and screen but that was it... mind you they were offering £1575 plus the bike back (which only had cosmetic damage) for an old heap of an ER5 that I know I'd never have got more than £1200 for even if selling privately.

Then the surveyors offered another £300 for the salvage on the bike... could have got it back on the road for not much more than that, but best to move on, and witht he drops and knocks it had I wasn't sad to see it go and pick up the SV in return!

Of course, if the insurers do use Glasses, you can always argue you don't have access to it, and refer to another guide. For cars, Parkers is often used, and frequently has higher values. I am not sure where you look for a bike, I know here they simply tend to do internet searches.

I got sold Gap total loss insurance where they will pay the difference between an insurance value and the value I paid. I bet there is some clause to stop it paying 90% of the time.

I used to work in claims and if you don't accept the value put on your bike then supply them with proof of bikes in similar condition are being sold for more and they should adjust the value accordingly. The point of the payout is to get you a bike of similar condition to the one you had, not better or worse, obviously your excess is taken of any pay out.
