The link you posted yourself disagrees, you realise? :) Higher octane in itself doesn't give a stronger explosion. It just makes it possible to run higher compression or more ignition advance, which does give more power- but the SV can't take advantage of this unless you take it to bits.

It works better in bits?

Morning all.
If you use normal unleaded from one of the major companies you're unlikely to notice much difference in performance if you try super.
However. if you normally fill up with supermarket muck or any other cheaper brand like Jet, you will probably notice a difference if you put super in, especially if you purchase it from one of the majors.
One point worth mentioning is that certain internal temperatures of your engine can increase by as much as 100 degrees C when running on super, which isn't necessarily a good thing in my book.
All petrol is not the same, it's usually cheaper for a reason at supermarkets etc.
Stick with branded fuel, & try to fill up at busy stations, as they have a higher turnover, & hence the fuel is fresher.

Cheers.

I swear they pee in the tanks at my local Jet. The petrol even smells different. Just been bought over by Sainsburys I think.

The bike just seems somewhat smoother on Super that regular unleaded - most noticably when in town pootling, other than that I get a better mpg...

Funny you should mention that, but I also noticed the other day that my cbr600 also might run smoother on super unleaded - transitions between closed and open throttle especially, which are one of my major irritations with the bike. Am going to experiment with the next few tanks to try and verify.

That's a pretty big difference - why is it supposed to happen, and is it just in cars that can automatically advance the ignition?

Re: Unleaded or super unleaded?

I've tried super on several occasions (on the basis that people keep saying they notice some difference or get better mileage) and have never noticed any improvement in the performance or mileage. The engine isn't designed to handle anything from the higher octane rating so it would be odd if anyone noticed performance gains, the mileage is affected by so many other factors it would be very difficult to know it was the petrol responsible.

I always use super when it's covered by work expenses though, because I can.

Re: Unleaded or super unleaded?

I've always used normal unleaded as i never saw the point in super, but next time i fill up i plan on giving it a go.

SG said the SV engine isn't made to handle a higher octane petrol, but what about an R6? It does say in the manual/on the bike min. 95 RON. Time will tell i guess.
