Received a bag of shiny engine bolts from Mr Chewy, beautifully sorted and documented. Gathered all my tools and went outside. Picked up Bolt #1 from Bag A and didn't have the right socket available. Became distracted by the thought of cold beer in the fridge, which summarily ended all maintenance for the day.

Checked the valve clearances. All four exhaust valves out of spec.

New shims and CCT gaskets ordered.

Weird when they weren't done that long ago. How bad were they? Is it running better now?

Not far out - the worst was .16

They were checked 10k miles ago so it's quite possible they've moved since then.

I didn't get to the bottom of the running issue so getting into it far enough to adjust the valve clearances gives me a chance to check everything out.

Drilled out the we bolt holding the baffle in my 'new to me' can for the gixxer.

Re'tapped the hole and fitted new stainless M5 cap.

Ready for fitting after work tonight. Will never sound as good as the SV but better than OE exhaust.

Drilled out the bolts that hold the front mudguard on my spare set of forks.

Oh we're wrong in so many ways you wouldn't understand, Darren.

Scary part about today is my cousin is now determined to get me out on track on this crazy bonkers tuned R1 that he's just acquired, as he said he wants to see me s*** a brick as the front lifts in 5th under the bridge at Knockhill just when your mind is saying its time to hit the brakes. It'll all end in tears, either laughter or pain and more than likely both.

Really? I didn't know that.

Probably wouldn't have bothered anyway. Since they sent me out on a bike with no brakes I haven't been in so much.

Tinkering for today was cleaning the curvy.

I had to wait in for a phone call (I know, how quaint). So with nothing better to do, I washed the bike, clay barred the paint, washed the bike again, polished the paint, chrome and bare alloy bits, then waxed it all.

Popped the baffle in the Daytona for my Observed Ride.
PCut a gamy bit of loom out of the zx6r's loom and fitted a DTRL to give the charging system an easier time .

Had the carbs off the EN500 to get it sorted. One stuck float needle, and as usual both float bowl o rings are perished. New ones on the way. Once it's done, the Mrs is doing her DAS. Probably next month.

Modified my airbox on the sv650 k5 that I am rebuilding slowly. Did the TPS mod. Got more parts coming this week. I know what I want it to look like and it is getting there. Slowly.

New seals in one rear caliper & reassembled.

The other spare caliper joining bolts refuse to budge, so Plusgaz treatment for them :smt072:smt072

I started a ten week motorcycle maintenance evening course last night at Hackney College with CMSD2. I'm basically clueless and fed up with paying the BMW dealer to do everything so when he suggested it I thought it was a good idea.

Ideally I would take my own bike along each week but the ride from Chelmsford to Lord's then back to Hackney then home will probably be a bit much in the middle of November after a long day at work so instead I'm planning on taking Chris's Tiger to bits each week, and if he's very lucky I might put it back together again. :-D

A great idea. I had a friend who knew his bikes and I learnt a lot from him. Once you know the basics you'll get the confidence to try bigger jobs. It's very satisfying too.

This afternoons plan is to 'hopefully' find my handle bars aren't bent at all....... with a bit of jiggery pokery magickery and some front fork bouncing. :smt120

See, as stock, most MOT centres would fail the bike on it trapping your thumbs on the tank straight out of the factory. my MOT place knows this is normal.
Currently, one side is banging on the tank, but is still aligned with the markings I drew on them last time I adjusted all the levers and bars for my comfort. They only look bent in the right bent shaped way. Who rides with their thumbs trapped to the tank anyway!!!??

We shall see, fingers crossed, my gut feeling is right :smt045

That will be the first job of getting her back on the road post accident.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?

You always forget about the lack of gap until you do a U turn and bang your digit. It's even worse if you get into a tank slapper.

My bars are like cow horns, great big flat bars.

U turns..... wots them?

Yea u turns are like wheelies, Stoppies and knee downs.
Optional.
But rospa test I've got to do figure 8 and a U ie. . Holding the front brake on and doughnut is apparently not accepted

Re: What have you tinkered with today?

Mines a naked. No chance of trapping thumbs on that.

The problem I have is...
My Leo Vince pipes are damaged the link pipes are not.. I have looked for some replacement Leos. That's not so simple. They don't exist for this bike.

They sound like they are raising hell

Anything else, will just sound muted :smt088
