The midday meal is 'lunch' - as in 'ladies who lunch' and 'packed lunch'. To call it 'dinner' is common. That's what I was taught, anyway (but my school had ideas well above it's station).
And for those that know me well, afternoon tea served at about 3.30pm is my favourite meal of the day. Bring on the cream cakes! |

Why were those splendid ladies at school called dinner ladies if it's not called dinner?
Never heard them called lunch ladies! |
