The midday meal is 'lunch' - as in 'ladies who lunch' and 'packed lunch'. To call it 'dinner' is common. That's what I was taught, anyway (but my school had ideas well above it's station).

And for those that know me well, afternoon tea served at about 3.30pm is my favourite meal of the day. Bring on the cream cakes!

Why were those splendid ladies at school called dinner ladies if it's not called dinner?

Never heard them called lunch ladies!

I don't understand why people keep listing tea as a meal. It's a drink ffs.

it is a drink and sometimes enjoyed with cucumber sandwiches and a scone around 4pm!!! :D

posh/middle class people have lunch

working class/nothernes have dinner

That's "afternoon tea" or "high tea".

And it's one of the 14 most important meals of the day...
