Well I've obviously opened a can of worms here. Glad to see there is some healthy debate going on - which is what forums are for! My source was the dealer I bought my bike from, who will remain nameless - although if you can recognise the forecourt from my avatar picture feel free to pop round and give them a slap! (PS it's not in Paignton). Apparently when they get a second hand faired SV in most people ask if they have one without the fairing. They said that at high speed you get buffeted by the wind and therefore the fairing isn't performing as well as could be. Their words, not mine, so don't shoot the messenger (or suggest that all my future comments are carp). Good to see some response from faired SV riders giving their opinion.

Personally I do not go for extra plastic as there is more to deal with after a fall or drop. My fly screen gives me ample protection from a head wind. You barely know you are doing 90!

That problem is true yes... but that's not the same thing as instability, instability would be wobble or weave or something that actually affects the chassis.

Most people reckon a double bubble screen cures the buffeting.

most problems with the instability is from the sv's loving to square front tires so its upright or a knee down job. the easiest cure is dual or triple compund tires

YBR 125 2,500 miles completly bald at 3,000

I've had asquaring issue but its been attributed to the age of the tires and the previous owner still having the orginals on

+1. I am the only high-speed instability on my SV 650s. On a private runway I have been to an indicated 137 and there was no problem - until I realised how far I had to go back to reasonable again!
