Well I've obviously opened a can of worms here. Glad to see there is some healthy debate going on - which is what forums are for! My source was the dealer I bought my bike from, who will remain nameless - although if you can recognise the forecourt from my avatar picture feel free to pop round and give them a slap! (PS it's not in Paignton). Apparently when they get a second hand faired SV in most people ask if they have one without the fairing. They said that at high speed you get buffeted by the wind and therefore the fairing isn't performing as well as could be. Their words, not mine, so don't shoot the messenger (or suggest that all my future comments are carp). Good to see some response from faired SV riders giving their opinion.
Personally I do not go for extra plastic as there is more to deal with after a fall or drop. My fly screen gives me ample protection from a head wind. You barely know you are doing 90!
