Back in 1996 myself, my wife and our two sons (4 & 9 at the time) came to Calgary. It was December 4th, 2.00 a.m. in the morning, -35 degrees. We had not jobs, no accomodation, no friends or relatives here, and had never visited before.
I now own my own company, my wife is manager of a large retail store, and both our sons have good jobs, so it can work if you are determined!
