the 1ltr cars are ok in the town but get them out of town and they are like clockwork toys.. need winding up, that and they start running out of puff at 70. no thanks.

Lady Poppy drives like a careful nun so it's not due to kerbing. I could see a damaged gaiter when I had a peek under the car before taking it in so I'm guessing its cud and salt over the years causing wear.

Not all 1.0 engines are the same. The turbocharged Ford Ecoboost lumps are a lot different to the sort of thing you get in a base model shopping car that Grannys buy. 70 in the loaner I've got until tomorrow is smooth and quiet, with a fair surge in reserve when you go for an overtake. It's as tourquey as a 1.8 16v from five years back and very handy. Try one and you'll be as surprised as I was.

ooohhh and its a load of borloks about diesels being shizz in town, i average 55mpg in town in my 1.6 yeti where the 1.1 or what ever it is only gets 35-40mpg in town. i'm sooooooo glad i never listened to the salesman. 600 miles to a tank aint half bad :-)

Racks can go. As for the Ecoboost 1.0 They aint bad but they need to be driven enthusiastically for them to be any fun.

My BM went in for looking at a couple of weeks back and they gave me a new 118i. I thought they had forgotten to put the engine in. I suppose you get used to 400nm torque and 200+ HP of a diesel. The 118i Also only returned 28mpg. My 123D returns around 40mpg on average (2L Twin Turbo)

Still, im sure that Diesels will start increasing in running costs due to the pollutants they emit

I'm now poorer by quite a lot but Lady Poppy's car now handles a LOT better. Quieter too as they also replaced a suspension top mount which was causing a rumbling noise we hadn't noticed as it was a gradual deterioration.

Viney you're quite right in that the 1.0 needed a few more revs and the torques were not quite as satisfying as my 1.6 Ecoboost. At least the extended test drive I effectively got means I have made up my mind to get the newer 1.5 version in a Focus when we replace the old Mondy later this year.
