Re: Which career road to go down?
I started as a I.T Technician 6 years ago when I was 17 years old with a medium sized business, after time I grew into the role, learned new skills and took on new responsibilities year on year, I pushed for them to contribute towards certifications and help broaden my skillset.
Although I was doing well out of the company my wage wasn't going up and after 5/6 years of hard work in busy two man I.T department I started to look for something else. I landed a new job in April as a Network Administrator for a big company the job spec was way above my profile but I still applied. Anyway I landed an interview and must of impressed and was asked back for the second round of interviews where I had to do a technical presentation. Few hours later I got a call offering me the job at a slightly reduced salary to the one advertised but the company offer to put me through all the qualifications they required on the job spec. I was over the moon as the reduced salary was still almost a 50% rise to what I earning and I get more qualified and experience. 3 months in and I have already been on a £2000 IIS Admin course and have been enrolled on a VMware course and multiple networking courses. When I talked to my new supervisor he told me that I was chosen for a number of reasons but the main one was because of the experience and wide range of skills I had gained over my time with Millers. The other candidates were all over 25 and had qualification matching the job spec but I still landed it. I'm only 23 and now earning quite good money in a job that's only going to allow me to develop and move up within the industry. The last few years at my old place were painful and I didn't enjoy it one bit but I kept at it and in the end it paid off. Can you not push for more responsibility and maybe to be put through some qualifications ? If you have the drive I'm sure you will succeed. Yeah Listen to your heart but also listen to your head.
