You are not greatly mistaken for believing the US was not the topic under discussion, but neither was pollution. If you choose to take umbridge with the Chinese on that ground then it's perfectly reasonable to point out other nations who also fall foul in a similar manner. They cannot be singled out for environmental damage unless everyone else is whiter than white.

Besides, why should developed Western nations be allowed to have industrialised, with horrific polluting results, before this current era of world-wide social responsibility. Is it right for them now to turn around and insist that developing nations cannot do so without massive punitive costs because the environment needs to be cared for? That's just hypocritical protectionism.
