+1 i wouldnt trust MS as far as i could throw them, MS do what they hell they want and take a long time to admit there is a problem.
Sony, IMO are doing a great job, had my PS3 over 2 years now and first time i know of when there has been a network down for this amount of time.

It wasn't the network. Some muppet thought that 2010 was a leap year. Only the older fat PS3's were affected.

From what I've read, Wyrdness is correct. Some donkey back in the olden days of PS3 "Phat" production had 2010 listed on the hardware as being a leap year. This meant one of the pre-logon checks failed as the date never existed. All it took was the internal clock to be updated to the correct date.

It did make me laugh though all the people on the PSN boards shouting "Give me a slim and a years worth of free games for the hassle as compensation". Some people really are stupid.
